Founded in 2020, the Healthy Brains Global Initiative, HBGI, was born out of a lack of prioritization and funding for mental health worldwide. In collaboration with the World Bank and with the support of the World Health Organization and UNICEF, HBGI was created to challenge the global mental health response. We uniquely take an outcomes-based approach to drive tangible impacts for individuals, families and communities. Mental health impacts everyone and all aspects of our lives. Nearly 1 billion people worldwide suffer from poor mental health, 1 in 2 of us in our lifetimes. Many countries spend less than 2% of their healthcare budget on mental health. In high income countries that invest in mental health, performance could often be managed better and outcomes could be clearer. Things need to be done differently: existing resources must go further, systems must change, and philanthropy must play a role. With the support of our Board, Advisory Council and Lived Experience Council, we are seeking to revolutionize the scale and effectiveness of mental health programs globally. We provide hands-on technical support across sectors to strengthen existing service performance for the user and their communities, such as our Technical Assistance work in California, and we also work with partners to create new programs, contracting them for outcomes, such as our maternal mental health pilot in South Africa. We are not a direct service provider. We work with others to create and enhance mental health programs that will operate flexibly, can be sustained over time and ultimately deliver for their users. In doing this, we are building the capacity of the system, gathering data on impact and ultimately leading systemic change. We are a registered non-profit (501c(3)).

CHK Design is proud to be part of the launch of the new brand identity for Healthy Brains Global Initiative (HBGI).? ? HBGI’s Mission: The logo ultimately connects to the work of Healthy Brains Global Initiative (HBGI) – to transform & build high-performing mental health systems that maximize outcomes for individuals – by highlighting the intricacies of cognitive processes and mental well-being, as well as the unique perception of each individual human being. The new logo incorporates an impossible shape, that appears to represent a three-dimensional object but cannot actually exist in reality. This creates a visual paradox that captures attention and engages the viewer’s mind. It subtly communicates complex ideas about mental processes and health. ?? The design utilizes the Gestalt principle, which refers to the mind’s ability to perceive whole forms rather than just a collection of simple lines and curves. This principle is at play as the viewer’s brain attempts to make sense of the impossible shape. ?? The impossible shape can be seen as a metaphor for the complexities and challenges of mental health issues, as well as reminds the viewer that we are all different and can see things from alternative perspectives. ? It encourages viewers to reflect on their own mental experiences, potentially increasing empathy and awareness for mental health issues. ? HBGI's Managing Director for Africa, Julia Greenland, spoke this morning on a panel titled "Show Me The Money: Funding The Light Within" at the #ShamiriSummit2024. This year's summit hosted by the Shamiri Institute addressed how hope, resilience, and optimism can empower individuals and communities, particularly the youth in Kenya, to navigate and overcome contemporary challenges. One of the highlights from the discussion included hearing from Amisa Rashid, Paul Wang, and Christine Musyimi, Ph.D. Julia noted, "I especially enjoyed Paul's examples of surprising outcomes from innovative programs, like this study of Ugandan children's improved school results after watching the Queen of Katwe movie: https://lnkd.in/e3zsqcHd."

Julia Greenland, HBGI's Managing Director for Africa, spoke alongside Amma Lartey, CEO of Impact Investing Ghana, and Esther Ndeti, Managing Partner at Unconventional Capital, in an insightful panel this week on "Catalysing Change: Aligning Capital, Impact and Investments for Sustainable Growth." The panel was part of the inaugural #2024AVPAConference focused on strengthening the impact ecosystem in Africa and enabling social investment across the continent, with a particular spotlight on innovative financing and sustainability strategies. Today, we've spent a lot of time in fancy rooms talking about financing. As we close, I want to take you to a different kind of room. In a church hall in Migori, I met a group of parents in crisis. They had done everything right- they had kept their girls in school, supported their education. But when those girls came back home pregnant, what were they to do? Kenya has made enormous advances in female education, but a teenage girl with a baby has only a 2% chance of being in school or training. These parents had big dreams for their daughters, but now they are facing a horrible realisation that the best option is to get them married to an older man as a second or third wife. Their once bright futures are closing in around them. Education is the biggest destination for domestic giving in Kenya. There are dozens of excellent, sustainably funded, life changing scholarship programmes targeting the brightest students. But only a few of these scholarships are targeted and set up to support these young mothers on the precipice of having their future snatched away return to school. In partnership with the SDGPP, which we celebrate today, we are building a new initiative to compliment the existing Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Impact bond which already works to prevent these pregnancies. We will work closely with private sector and Philanthropy to create a $15 million, heavily leveraged fund to incentivise these existing funds to invest in young mothers, delivering 10,000 years of high impact education. I had such an inspiring day last week with Dr. Margaret Njenga and her PS Kenya team, meeting with people who benefited from their inspiring program integrating mental health support with drug-resistant TB. Getting a TB diagnosis comes with a huge amount of stigma, anxiety and distress, even more so when you are told that you will be coming to clinic every day for a year, to take literally over a dozen pills. PS Kenya ensured that there was psychological and economic support available to these patients, making a dramatic difference in their quality of life and ability to adhere to their very challenging treatment. As part of our new partnership between Healthy Brains Global Initiative (HBGI) and PS Kenya, we will be working together to scale and integrate outcomes based management to this absolutely life saving intervention. Vida Plena recently had the honor of co-hosting a breakfast meetup during UNGA in NYC with leaders from the global mental health space. ??? This gathering brought together innovators representing a diverse array of international organizations from regions such as India and Africa, alongside notable domestic institutions in the U.S. It was a unique opportunity to foster collaboration among individuals united by a shared mission to advance mental health initiatives. The discussions led by Jonathan McKay from SameSame (SiyaFanaFana) created a welcoming environment where participants felt comfortable stepping beyond their professional facades to share openly and honestly. This humility and vulnerability are essential for building strong connections and driving meaningful change in the mental health sector. We are deeply grateful to all attendees for their contributions and insights, which will undoubtedly strengthen our collective efforts, especially to Dena Trujillo, Sandra Contreras, Richa Gupta, Vedant Jain, Jonathan E.
