Reimagining Health with AI, Tech, and Intentionality This week, I had the privilege to catch up with some old friends (Heather Cole-Lewis, PhD and Alain Labrique) and make some new ones at the Google Health Partner Summit. One message stood out: A one-size approach does not work. Context and our individual circumstances and needs matter. Good news: we are increasingly in a position to move more and more toward hyper-personalized health by better leveraging technology and innovation- with a human in the loop. Always with a human in the loop. From AI-driven tools that ease clinician burden to building blocks for localized GenAI, the future of health demands an ecosystem approach—where technology, life science, and public health converge to drive impact. Some key reflections: ?? Personalized health is here with more and more of the right diagnosis, right treatment, right time (earlier and earlier) in the right context for the right person. ?? To achieve health equity, AI must be human-centered. ?? Behavior change is critical for digital health adoption and impact. ?? Technology is bridging gaps in access and quality of care from TB screening to emergency obstetric care to diabetes management to Alzheimers treatment. The future of health isn’t just about AI—it’s about intention, responsibility, and making health more human. #GoogleHealth #DigitalHealth #AIinHealthcare #HealthEquity #Innovation

Subject: Bridging the Digital Divide in Healthcare – A Conversation with Dr. Patty Mechael Greetings, Straight Outta Health IT Tribe! In a world where technology has the power to transform healthcare, the digital divide continues to leave millions behind. How can we bridge this gap to ensure equitable access for all? In this episode of Straight Outta Health IT, Dr. Patty Mechael, co-founder and CEO of health.enabled, dives into the challenges of digital health equity. She highlights key barriers—including inadequate connectivity, limited device access, and systemic disparities, particularly for women in low- and middle-income countries. Too often, digital health solutions are designed with a narrow lens, reflecting high-income perspectives while overlooking the needs of diverse populations. To create truly inclusive digital health solutions, Dr. Mechael advocates for an approach that integrates ethnographic research, ensuring technology is accessible, usable, and meaningful for all. But technology alone isn’t the answer. She emphasizes the importance of hybrid models that combine digital innovation with community-based interventions, ensuring those without digital access aren’t left behind. Strong political leadership is also critical—countries that have successfully implemented digital health strategies have done so with committed policymaking that prioritizes equity. As a global leader in digital health strategy, health.enabled plays a key role in supporting governments and organizations in assessing and improving their digital health maturity. Initiatives like the Global Digital Health Monitor help countries track progress and strengthen their digital health ecosystems. Dr. Mechael remains optimistic: with intentional, equity-driven efforts, digital health can transform access to care. However, real change takes time and sustained commitment to addressing systemic inequities. Join us for this insightful conversation as Dr. Patty Mechael unpacks the digital health challenges, solutions, and the path forward for global healthcare equity! Tackling Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV): A Call to Action A couple of weeks ago our CEO and co-founder, Patty Mechael, attended a TFGBV symposium- something that frankly was both depressing because the problem exists and is impacting so many people, and encouraging because there are organizations and people working toward addressing it. While technology is transforming every aspect of how we live and do business, for too many women and girls digital technology has become a tool of harm. Nearly 85% of women worldwide have witnessed or experienced online violence, and women are 27 times more likely than men to be harassed online. From cyberstalking and non-consensual image sharing to AI-driven discrimination, TFGBV is a growing crisis. At health.enabled, we believe that technology should be a force for good, not a weapon of oppression. Addressing TFGBV requires a collective, multi-sectoral response grounded in advocacy, research, and a gender-intentional approach: ?? Advocate for policies and platforms that center gender equity and digital safety. We need stronger protections, survivor-centered solutions, and corporate accountability to create safer online spaces. Currently, only 1 in 4 countries have legal protections against online gender-based violence. ?? Research to understand the scope and impact of TFGBV. Data-driven insights must guide policy and practice, ensuring our solutions are responsive to the lived realities of women and girls. A UN study found that 73% of women journalists have experienced online harassment, affecting their work and mental well-being. ?? Adopt a Gender-Intentional Approach in designing and deploying digital health and tech solutions. Equity must be embedded from the outset—ensuring women’s voices shape the tools meant to serve them. AI bias and digital exclusion disproportionately harm women, with 52% of women having limited or no access to digital tools. The digital age should empower, not endanger. It’s time to take action. Join us in advocating for a safer, more inclusive digital world. #TFGBV #GenderEquity #DigitalSafety

Can AI Improve Public Health Writing? Key Takeaways from Our Experiment At health.enabled, we put Generative AI to the test—comparing human vs. AI-supported approaches for developing a Technical Brief on digital health for supportive supervision in immunisation. What We Learned: ? AI = Speed: LLMs delivered major time savings during pre-writing (outlines, research questions, summaries). ?? AI ≠ Accuracy: Outputs looked polished but lacked depth, technical precision, and clear citations. ?? Human-in-the-loop is a must: Expert oversight is critical to catch inaccuracies and ensure relevance. ?? Equity blindspots: AI didn’t surface gender, geographic, or socioeconomic biases—highlighting the need for intentional equity-focused prompts, datasets, and referencing. Bottom line: A focus on accuracy is insufficient. AI can support public health writing—but only with expert guidance, clear prompts, and a focus on transparency and equity along with accuracy. #PublicHealth #AIinHealth #DigitalHealth #healthenabled #GenAI #ResponsibleAI #Gavi #AIWriting

The EU recently announced its AI Act, which bans AI applications that pose risks to safety, privacy, and dignity—such as AI-powered manipulation and exploitation of human vulnerabilities, social scoring systems, and invasive biometric tracking. As technology impacts our everyday lives, safeguards are essential for preventing harm and building trust. ?? With health classified as a high-risk category, regulatory requirements are hefty, which will lead to a significant increase in development costs for many AI-driven healthcare innovations. The need for a multi-institutional approach, collaborating across governments, private sectors, and civil society is critical to ensure health continues to receive the benefits of AI applications that are safe, accessible, and equitable. ? When done right, regulation is a guide for sustainable innovation that protects lives. We see this as an opportunity to lead by example by developing solutions that are ethical, effective, and inclusive. Through proactive engagement with these regulations, we can drive responsible innovation while ensuring AI reduces health disparities and reaches marginalized communities, including children, who deserve the highest standard of protection and care. ?
