When Mark Hagland of Healthcare Innovation asked to interview me about the challenges of collecting Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) data directly from patients, I was honored to speak on such an important topic when it comes to advancing health equity.? ? Our team at Phreesia has worked with Paul Lovely at the CARE Center, a leader in caring for LGBTQI+ patients, to do this at scale in a way that makes people feel comfortable and ensures healthcare providers and organizations have accurate information about the patients they care for.? ? "When a patient walks in and someone asks them their sexual orientation or gender information—self-reporting digitally allows a person to decide how they self-identify. You also have the challenge that it is very hard to train staff at scale to do this and to get it right, with a population that has already felt turned off in healthcare. So one of the advantages of technology and digital platforms is that you can train the platform to do it the exact way you want, with the exact wording and timing, etc. It also gives people a chance to answer questions privately, usually on their mobile phones in advance of an appointment. We hear stories all the time about an uncomfortable staff member not knowing how to ask things or are filling things out without asking patients.
