Marshfield Clinic Health System sought to consolidate urgent care services within its emergency department to increase operational efficiencies and decrease patient confusion when accessing either service. This consolidation required the existing ED to be upgraded and expanded, yet previous studies could not identify a way to accomplish either without severe operational disruptions, nor was there any apparent adjacent space to expand. The #HCDcon session "Adaptive Reuse on the Clock: The 20 Seconds That Made a Two-Story ED Possible" featured the design team from CannonDesign sharing the unique challenges and the creative solutions that enabled the modernization of Marshfield’s ED while simultaneously creating a pathway for other strategic campus initiatives. The key to the design was creating a two-story ED that necessitated adding patient transport elevators. Thank you to speakers Andy Lane, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP, LEAN Green Belt and Daniel Schmidt for sharing the innovative solutions required to implement this solution.

Comprising a range of spaces, including treatment and recovery, diagnostics, laboratory, and education areas, #cancer care facilities require balancing high-tech requirements with elements such as natural light, soothing color palettes, and comfortable furnishings. At Sarah Cannon Research Institute, designed by Gresham Smith, the waiting room is designed to feel more like an upscale residential living room than a cancer treatment center, with cozy furniture and accent pieces. Since early 2023, Perkins&Will has regularly convened a group of healthcare practitioners from 16 organizations to talk about experiences, connect with peers, and brainstorm about what’s next. The #HCDcon 2024 presentation, "Transforming the Workplace: Rethinking Administrative Office Space for Healthcare," was a “report out” of the findings from this group, and three participants in these ongoing conversations—from Nemours, Northwell Health, and Rush University System for Health. Findings revealed the strong business case for consolidating real estate holdings right now, the need for a comprehensive look at real estate and space provisioning that is more dynamic and equitable, the need to design for health and well-being, and the importance of framing a strong business case for change.
