Looking for inspiration? Look to the PhD and Master's students who took my fall class on social & structural drivers of health equity at the Meharry School of Global Health.
In their last class of the semester, students presented compelling, multi-level strategic plans to address upstream drivers of health inequities impacting specific communities, ranging from teens experiencing depression in Chicago and residents living in "Cancer Alley", to Black women battling triple-negative breast cancer, and residents living in zip code 29203 - one of the?"most medically dangerous communities in the Deep South."
It has been my honor and joy to teach this class of practitioners, scholars, and advocates about the science and practice of moving upstream to improve health and advance health justice. Their individual and collective commitment to health equity - and to each other and their communities - gives me hope.
My sincere thanks to the HealthBegins network and to my friends and colleagues who shared their real-world expertise and wisdom as guest presenters this semester, including Paula Braveman , Seth Berkowitz, Brian Smedley, Jaquelyn (Jackie) Jahn, Andrew Beck, Josie Alston Williams, and Tony Iton.
And my deepest gratitude to Jacquelyn S. Dalton, MPH (whose teaching assistance was invaluable), Henry C. and to Meharry's leaders including Alicia Holloway, EdD Angelita Howard, EdD, Fazal Khan and of course to Dean Daniel Dawes for the invitation to join Meharry School of Global Health as founding faculty.
Last but not least, thanks to each of my students. Einstein once said, "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." But the corollary is also true - It is the supreme privilege of the teacher to share in a student's joy, in their journey of creative expression and knowledge. Thank you for that gift.
