In Maryland’s Howard County, high school seniors are diving into AI training through a new apprenticeship program that blends tech education with real-world experience. Launched by non-profit Health Tech Alley in partnership with the Apprenticeship Maryland Program and the Howard County School District, the initiative offers training in artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science. “Being able to protect yourself from it, because you can understand what it does and what it’s there for, is very beneficial,” said Tyese Johnson, a senior at Oakland Mills High School. The program also aligns with broader tech career growth in the region, with cities like DC offering grants to startups that hire apprentices and promoting training platforms. In Maryland, the demand for tech talent, especially in cybersecurity, is outstripping supply, driven by the region’s designation as a Tech Hub by the Economic Development Administration. https://lnkd.in/ertTUq9t

Our Program Coordinator, Meghan Dhond, discusses the importance of open communication with the apprentices, to ensure success and align with their career goals.
Consistent feedback and open communication are at the heart of our program. We hold weekly meetings with our apprentices to discuss their progress, completed tasks, and, most importantly, their career aspirations. Our goal? To ensure that each apprentice is working towards something they truly enjoy and envision as part of their future career path. We're learning alongside them in this new program, and their feedback is essential to shaping a successful experience. It’s all about preparing them for a career they’re passionate about!
