Did you know that although genetic mutations can be passed down to future generations, new changes that cause disease occur frequently with no family history? One of the ways to get an idea of your risk of developing or passing on a health condition is through genetic testing. But many of us don't hear or think about genetic testing until someone is already diagnosed with an illness or is carrying a pregnancy. Many health conditions caused by genetic variants disproportionately impact Black communities. And because we need more research on the genetic profiles of Black people across ethnicities, there are gene variations we may have that haven't yet been associated with specific diseases. Receiving genetic testing and counseling can help inform and empower us around prevention efforts and effective treatments, which improves our quality of life. So of course, we're exploring this in our next event: “Unraveling Our Inheritance: The Importance of Genetic Testing for Black Communities” with Carli Andrews, certified genetic counselor, and Jasmine A. Mack, geneticist and biostatistician. ??? Wednesday, April 23, 2025 ? 7:00 PM ET This community conversation, sponsored by 23andMe, maps out genetic testing and its benefits; explores the interactions between our geographic ancestry, environments, and genes; and highlights trustworthy handling of our data. Add it to your calendars and get ready to unwind these strands of information! ?? Registration is free – save your spot now!
