“As a first-generation immigrant and DACA recipient, I have experienced firsthand how the lack of healthcare access affects immigrant communities. I believe we have a responsibility to advocate for those directly affected by systemic inequities and to think critically about what health equity means to marginalized communities. If you want to call me a dreamer, dream with me, of a future that we are a true Commonwealth that protects all of its residents and gives them a chance to not only survive, but to thrive and live healthy lives."
As we conclude Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re highlighting the incredible contributions of Compact member?Javier A Juarez. Javier is the Director of the?Latino Equity Fund?at the?The Boston Foundation, the only Latinx-led and Latinx-dedicated community fund in Massachusetts. Under Javier’s leadership, LEF increases philanthropy to organizations throughout the state that focus on increasing economic prosperity, healthcare access, and well-being for the Latinx population.
Javier spoke at the “Cover All Kids” Advocacy Day earlier this year in support of?An Act to Ensure Equitable Health Coverage for Children, a bill that would expand MassHealth coverage to all income-eligible children, regardless of immigration status. Javier has also supported the collaboration between?Health Care For All all and Agencia ALPHA?through the MassHealth Redetermination Campaign to help Massachusetts residents maintain their health coverage.
In Javier’s words, he is proud to do this pivotal work alongside the Health Equity Compact leadership team and leaders across the state who are making change to improve people’s lives. Javier sees his role at the Compact as bridging community insights with philanthropic partnerships to create meaningful change for communities.
As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re grateful to leaders like Javier, who is leveraging his life experience to break down barriers to healthcare access.
