"Essential hospitals – and the rest of the health care sector – can better serve patients and prepare for climate disruption by investing in sustainability and resilience...Fortunately, funding is readily available to build infrastructure resilience – if hospitals take action now to access it." Through a partnership between Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth, America's Essential Hospitals, and Oakwell, an innovative pilot cohort of hospitals is embarking on a journey to uncover decarbonization and resilience opportunities, and secure funding sources like the Inflation Reduction Act to drive significant change. Read about the pilot cohort and how this partnership aims to remove barriers hospitals and health systems face in accessing funds for sustainability and climate resilience, and expand this work to a broader group of hospitals nationwide. Huge thanks to: ?Gary Cohen, Robert Biggio, and Kalpana Ramiah, DrPH, MSc, MBA for authoring this piece ?The participants in the pilot cohort – who hail from Grady Health System, Henry Ford Health, and Jackson Health System – and to Boston Medical Center (BMC) for their pilot participation ?The participating individuals from our pilot cohort hospitals, Steven Ziffer, MS, CHFM from Grady Health System, Philip Guster from Henry Ford Health, and Elizabeth Joseph from Jackson Health ?The individuals involved in this partnership from each of its sponsor organizations – Emily (Emmie) Mediate, Antonia Herzog, and Shanda Demorest from Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth; Kalpana Ramiah and Tanya Alteras from America’s Essential Hospitals; and Shane Dunne and Jack Nelson, P.E. from Oakwell

The Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal has released the Baseline Assessment of GHG Emissions of Nepal’s Health Sector, 2024, marking the first comprehensive analysis of the sector’s environmental footprint. This crucial report provides data to guide policies for a low-carbon, climate-resilient healthcare system. A key component of the assessment was measuring the GHG footprint of healthcare facilities for 2022 using the Climate Impact Checkup (CIC) tool, developed by Health Care Without Harm. This tool integrates activity data, emission factors, and the global warming potential of different gases to deliver a detailed emissions picture. To support this effort, Health Care Without Harm: ? ? Trained the Ministry of Health, WHO Nepal, and healthcare facilities on using the CIC tool ??Provided technical guidance on applying the tool and interpreting results for policy and decision-making "Nepal is a member of the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health, committed to measuring health sector emissions and developing an action plan for reductions. This baseline assessment is a critical first step toward achieving a low-carbon, resilient health system." – Diana Picon Manyari, International Climate Director, Health Care Without Harm. ? ??? It's not too late to join us virtually this morning at 9:30 a.m. ET! ??
For more reasons than I can name, I am looking forward to seeing so many from the Climate and health community this weekend. For anyone not registered, there is still time to attend virtually! I can't guarantee that the chance to hear from Robert McLean, Emily (Emmie) Mediate, Elizabeth Schenk, and Neelu Tummala is worth admission on its own. . . but I certainly would argue it. https://lnkd.in/eA-MpmZB
