At Headwaters Foundation for Justice, we fund organizing. Because we know that community organizing and grassroots movements are the engine that makes social change happen. It is through our donors that we are able to sustain our community-led grantmaking, putting money and trust into community hands. You can help us keep the momentum going this Give to the Max Day. 关于我们
We are a Minneapolis-based community foundation that invests in grassroots organizing across Minnesota. We do this through grantmaking programs that support organizations and groups on the front lines of social change. Each of our programs invite people from the community to learn about and lead our grantmaking work. Since 1984, Headwaters has believed that the people who directly experience society’s injustices are exactly the people who know the way to collective liberation. We fund a variety of groups, and we prioritize funding groups that are led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color. Our mission is to amplify the power of community to advance equity and justice. Our four core values are: Advance Equity. Our work supports movements and systems change that lead to individual resiliency and community power. Demand Inclusion. People who are most affected by inequity are often left out of decision-making work. We insist on changing that—nationally, regionally, and locally. Transform Power. We grow power through community-led grantmaking, donor education, and leadership development. Trust in Community. A community knows itself best, and its people need to lead the way to collective liberation. Our job is to listen to and support the solutions that will improve life for all Minnesotans.

What does storytelling have to do with the fight for justice? Hear from Headwaters' Director of Communications, Ewan Scotto, on the role stories play in being able to imagine a better, more just world. "By investing deeply into storytelling and inviting our community to consider these stories, we are building a future where these stories are normalized, not marginalized. And as these disruptive stories move closer to the center of our communities’ consciousness, we move closer to the world we are building alongside our grantees." ?? As we round out our 40th Anniversary blog series, we hope you have enjoyed getting a closer look at the heart of our work! From donor organizing to philanthropic organizing, community-led grantmaking to narrative organizing - we are honored and excited to continue this work alongside you all. ?? TODAY- the Black Collective Foundation MN is launching MN LEAD, a new multiracial initiative that proactively addresses legal challenges to race-conscious programming, shapes narratives, and supports strategic efforts to strengthen and connect the ecosystem advancing racial justice. In the wake of the presidential election, we turn our focus hyperlocal. Four years ago, the people of Minnesota state ignited a global movement against racial injustice, creating monumental shifts within systems once considered immovable. We are still those people. To create a lasting impact, we must nurture an ecosystem that supports racial justice beyond election cycles, harnessing civic engagement year-round. Our new initiative, MN LEAD, expands a proven model in California launched by the California Black Freedom Fund Building on the success of the LEAD for Racial Justice initiative. Learn more, partner, and/or give to MN LEAD! mnblackcf.org/mnlead Thank you to our MN LEAD initiative anchor funders: McKnight Foundation Bush Foundation Margaret A. No matter the political landscape, community organizing continues. As election day approaches, our work at Headwaters Foundation for Justice remains the same. Grassroots movements led by Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color have moved our communities toward justice for generations. Movements will continue to build with creativity, community care, and a liberatory vision that does not begin or end with who holds office. Headwaters is here to resource community organizing and help build strong movements in all political conditions.? Know your rights, follow your conscience, and take care of each other. The fight for collective liberation does not start or end tomorrow. We’re so grateful to be alongside you all in this work ?? Full Letter: https://lnkd.in/gFktpp9J

Over the summer, two of our powerful and dedicated board members cycled off our Board of Directors. Please join us in celebrating their contributions during their years of service! Both Camille Cyprian and Leah Olm brought thoughtfulness and wisdom to their time on the board and were committed to moving Headwaters closer to our mission of advancing justice led by community. Camille had been on the board since 2018 and served as Chair starting in 2021. Leah joined the board in 2021 and served as our Treasurer since 2022. As we prepared for their cycling off of the board, we also welcomed new board members this summer. See our full slate here: https://lnkd.in/giWTVTAm We hope you’ll join us in thanking Camille and Leah for all their work and advocacy for Headwaters! We’re so glad we’ll get to keep them in the Headwaters community as friends and supporters. Thank you, Camille and Leah!

Hear from Alfred Walking Bull, a 2023 Wellspring Fund community grantmaker! ?? Ever wondered what it's like to be a community grantmaker? Alfred shares their perspective on how philanthropy is Indigenous, what solidarity looks like in practice, and how it all connects to community-led grantmaking. "Growing up in the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, I learned that generosity must be the first of our core values. Both at home and in school, I was reminded that of the other three values of bravery, fortitude, and wisdom, none are possible without a generous spirit." ??
