Opening my door, I was greeted by 12 radiant, smiling faces, each eager to show me their creation. In the middle of the joyful chaos and their enthusiasm to explain their artwork, I was reminded of the essence of "why" we persist in our unwavering commitment to the impactful legacy of Head Start over the past 60 years. Gratitude fills me as I reflect on the love I have for what I do. Reflecting on my time spent in Washington DC with Head Start leaders from across the nation, a wide range of emotions fills me. This week, we were deeply immersed in the concern over the potential shutdown of Head Start agencies nationwide. The fear of the possible impact on the families served by Head Start and the dedicated staff who tirelessly uphold its mission was truly overwhelming. Nevertheless, amidst this uncertainty, I bore witness to the remarkable power of advocacy. The collective passion and unified voice that sprang into action, leading to tangible changes, was truly transformative. While there is still much work ahead, today I am filled with hope that together, we can achieve anything. As we approach the end of another year providing Head Start services, it is essential to reflect on the countless experiences and challenges that have shaped our journey over the past 12 months. This year saw the introduction of proposed new performance standards aimed at enhancing the quality and effectiveness of our programs, however these came as unfunded mandates. The implementation of the new performance standards are no small feat, requiring extensive training and collaboration among staff.?Alongside these new performance standards, initiatives such as the Full Enrollment Initiative (FEI) and the Risk Assessment Notification (RAN). We faced several natural challenges that testing our resilience and resourcefulness. The impact of this reminded us of the importance of preparedness and community solidarity, as we worked diligently to support our families during this trying time. Additionally, this year also had Head Starts submitting change of scope, cutting the number of families we served which further illustrating the dynamic nature of our work and the ongoing need to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of early childhood education. As we reflect on the year, it is hard to ignore the broader societal context surrounding us, particularly the fascinating political climate driven by one of the most interesting presidential races in recent history. In the coming year, we must remain committed in our mission while keeping an eye on the shifting landscape that affects the future of Head Start services. Together, we can build on the lessons learned and successes achieved, continuing to advocate for quality Head Start early childhood education and support for all children and families. In the face of numerous challenges, Head Start has remained deadicated in our commitment to delivering essential Head Start services to children and families. Our resolve to move forward has not wavered, even when obstacles seemed insurmountable. Each step we take is a testament to the dedication Head Start staff, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our programs continue to thrive. I received an email today from someone who is taking a college course out of Ohio State. The professor posted a link to a resource she wanted the class to use. The opening sentence was "Something special is happening in Head Start of Lane County, in Springfield, Oregon." The?article?is from 2017 and from our program.
