In honor of Black History Month, we want to honor the incredible legacy of Wanda Meshack Smith, a true pioneer in early childhood education. As the founder and former CEO of Head Start of Greater Dallas, Mrs. Smith transformed the lives of countless children and families in Dallas County. A Visionary Leader: In 1989, she founded Dallas County Family Services, which later became Head Start in Dallas County. Building a Legacy: Under her leadership, Head Start grew from serving 485 children with a $400,000 budget to impacting over 4,400 children with a $38 million budget. A Role Model: As an African-American woman leading one of the 4th largest non-profits in Dallas, Mrs. Smith broke barriers and inspired generations. In 2018, she was inducted into the African American Education Hall of Fame. Thank you, Mrs. Smith, for your dedication and for paving the way for a brighter future for children in Dallas. We are deeply saddened to share that the wildfires in California have caused immense loss for Head Start colleagues, parents, and families. The tragedy is especially profound in Altadena, a historically Black community that was redlined by Pasadena to the foot of the mountain. *The Nesbitt Center in Altadena, one of the EHS programs, and two of their provider homes have been completely destroyed by the fires. *Six additional provider homes have sustained significant damage. *The fires have displaced 70 families and 13 staff members, impacting a total of 130 families. *Seven families have lost their homes entirely. *One staff member has lost their home, and another's home is still unaccounted for. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. We are reaching out to our impacted colleagues, parents, and families to offer our support and assistance during this difficult time.
