The EPA’s final Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) raise the standard for drinking water systems to find and replace lead and galvanized service lines. Utilities have a lot to navigate in this new regulatory landscape: a lower action level of 10 ppb, fast-tracked lead service line replacement, additional public notification and education requirements, and more. While most of the proposed elements remain, the focus areas are a comprehensive call for utilities to revisit the very foundations of corrosion control, monitoring and sampling efforts, lead service line replacement plans, and community engagement.
