The USDA's most recent data shows roughly 5% of all food-insecure households had at least one member -including children - who ate less because they lacked the money or other resources to get food. Recognizing that reliable access to nutritious food is essential to health and wellness we have partnered with organizations across our communities including Feeding America, Hunger Free Oklahoma, and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger. Did you know nearly 200,000 new honeybees joined our urban beekeeping program last year? The program houses at least 50,000 docile honeybees in each new hive, with a total of 12 hives and approximately 600,000 bees across our five states - supporting surrounding gardens and crops while educating employees about the insects' larger influence on the ecosystem. We salute Jill Wolowitz on her important and continued work with the Civic Federation and President Joe Ferguson.
This morning, I had the pleasure of attending the Civic Federation’s Annual Meeting, and as the immediate past Board Chair and chair of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate of nominees for 2025 to the Board, Officers, Executive Committee, Trustees and Council of Advocates. Congratulations to all of our newly confirmed members. It was great to have Congressman Mike Quigley as our guest speaker and share his candid thoughts on the incoming administration, congressional activities and its impact on Chicagoland and global affairs. Congratulations to the Civic Federation Board Chair Jill Wolowitz, President Joe Ferguson and the entire Federation staff, for a great meeting recapping our busy and active year sharing best practices for local and state governments, sharing our new development goals, and lastly, laying out and approving our new 5-yr strategic plan. A special thank you to Board member Samir Mayekar, for hosting us at the Polsky Center at the University of Chicago for our meeting. Great to see many board members in person to see this pretty unique space!

The United States recycling rate has increased from less than 7% in 1960 to the current rate of 32% according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but there is still more work to do to increase sustainability efforts. Today on America Recycles Day, we are shining a light on the sustainability initiatives taking place across our headquarters, including diverting up to 32% of the 3,400 pounds of waste generated daily from landfills through our recycling and composting programs. With our mobile health programs, neighborhood centers, and community partners, we're expanding access to diabetes treatment and management to areas that need it most - like counties along New Mexico's southern border currently facing a shortage of health care providers with some of the state's highest diabetes rates. For over 100 years, Union League Boys & Girls Clubs has been supporting Chicago youth through safe spaces, opportunities, and collaborative programming, including trauma-informed care. Last week, we donated over 70 decommissioned office monitors to their campuses to help provide a safe and enriching environment for the over 13,000 kids they support while reducing our environmental impact by minimizing waste in our operations.
