HCA Healthcare patient Poppy Gorden’s journey is one of courage, compassion and collaborative care. As a toddler, Poppy’s parents noticed she had trouble performing basic daily activities. A country-wide search for answers led Poppy’s family to HCA Midwest Health and she was diagnosed with myoclonus-dystonia, a rare and complex movement disorder. ? Menorah Medical Center’s skilled neurology care team created a personalized treatment plan to care for Poppy and performed a deep brain stimulation procedure, aimed to help improve her motor function and movement control. At four years old, Poppy was one of the youngest patients to undergo the cutting-edge neurological procedure. Before the procedure, Poppy's dystonia interfered with her ability to walk, run and feed herself. ? Nearly one year after her lifechanging surgery, Poppy is happy and healthy. She and her family recently returned to Menorah Medical Center to thank her care team for their compassion and expertise. Poppy concluded her hospital visit by showing her caregivers how she could now skip unassisted with her older brother, Fox. ? Poppy, we are honored to be part of your healthier tomorrow! ? #CareLikeFamily #HealthierTomorrows?

On National Hospitalist Day, HCA Healthcare thanks hospitalist physicians for their compassion and expertise. These highly skilled hospital medicine practitioners provide exemplary clinical care to our patients during their hospital stay by diagnosing, managing and treating a wide range of conditions, as well as coordinating care across many specialties. A hospitalist’s extensive clinical experience in caring for some of the most complex medically ill patients – as well as their focus on providing patient-centered care – translates into safe, high quality care for hospitalized patients. Dr. Jennifer Everett-Damewood serves as the Hospitalist Medical Director at TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center in Tennessee, and has been a part of the hospitalist community for more than 10 years. “I love taking care of patients and building those relationships by getting to know them and their families,” she shared. “I enjoy seeing the care that I provide make a difference in patients’ well-being and sometimes their lives. It is very rewarding.” Dr. Everett-Damewood recently was named HCA Healthcare’s TriStar Division 2024 Medical Director of the Year for her commitment to leadership, innovation and excellence. Thank you to dedicated hospitalists across HCA Healthcare, like Dr. Everett-Damewood, for your commitment to the care and improvement of human life. #CareLikeFamily #HospitalistDay

For over thirty years, HCA Healthcare colleague Robin Yoder has made a remarkable impact on the lives of countless cancer patients and their families. As an oncology social worker at Johnston-Willis Hospital, a part of HCA Virginia Health System, Robin has used her own cancer journey to fuel her passion for helping and inspiring others. As a teenager, Robin was diagnosed and treated for osteosarcoma. Years later, Robin was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, which ultimately resulted in the amputation of her right leg above the knee. As a two-time cancer survivor, Robin’s unique perspective and tremendous courage has shaped a profound career supporting our cancer patients. To further her impact, Robin helped create The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation at Johnston-Willis Hospital, supporting cancer patients and caregivers throughout central Virginia. She facilitates several cancer support groups and hosts an Annual Cancer Survivorship Day event. In 2021, Robin received the HCA Healthcare Frist Humanitarian Award for her efforts and donated $2,500 of awarded funds to The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation. Annually, Robin leads and joins friends, HCA Healthcare physicians, patients and other participants in a fundraising walk. She is there every step of the way – all 51.7 miles. In its three years, the event has raised nearly $95,000 to help support patient needs like transportation and food. “For me it’s personal because when I was diagnosed in 2010, I never would have imagined I would walk 51.7 miles, let alone do it three times,” Robin shared. “What started from a small $2,500 award has now grown into a signature event that helps ease the burdens faced by local cancer patients.” Thank you, Robin, for inspiring us through your compassion and dedication to your patients and community. #PositiveImpact

At HCA Healthcare, we exist to give people a healthier tomorrow. 61-year-old patient Robert Dwayne Williams has spent more than 30 years in the sky as an agricultural pilot. When working, Robert felt what he thought was a pinched nerve in his shoulder, and it progressively felt worse throughout the day. When Robert arrived home, he still did not feel well. His wife called 911 and Robert was taken to a local Texas hospital where it was confirmed Robert had suffered a heart attack and post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal rupture (VSR), a life-threatening heart complication that can occur after an acute myocardial infarction (MI). Due to the rarity Robert’s condition, he required higher level of care and was transferred to HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center, which is equipped with a full spectrum of services and treatment options and a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory. Robert’s care team, led by Dr. Pranav Loyalka, cardiologist, discovered 7-centimeter hole in Robert’s heart. He was admitted to the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) and it was determined Robert would benefit from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a highly specialized life support treatment that allows the heart and lungs to rest and heal while a machine temporarily takes over their function. Robert underwent a lifesaving heart surgery, performed by Dr. Eyal Porat, cardiothoracic surgeon, to repair the hole in Robert’s heart. “The entire wall between the left and right ventricles disintegrated and was completely torn due to the massive heart attack,” Dr. Porat said. “We opened the heart and reconstructed the wall between the ventricles as well as the free wall of the heart using patches.” Following his recovery, Robert began rehabilitation with the hospital’s physical therapy team to help him regain his strength and the ability to perform daily activities. “They never treated me like a patient,” Robert shared with gratitude. “The physicians and staff went above and beyond to care for me and my family.” As we round out American Heart Month, we extend our gratitude to caregivers across HCA Healthcare who provide compassionate care, combined with advanced treatment, to cardiovascular patients like Robert.
