At HCA Healthcare, we strive to build healthier tomorrows in the communities we serve. Today, we are proud to announce that the HCA Healthcare Foundation, through its Healthier Tomorrow Fund, will give $1.84 million to Mile High United Way to launch United for Healthy Starts, a national collaboration between four United Ways to help increase access to social, economic and educational support services for families. The effort is led by Mile High United Way in Denver and includes United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, United Way Miami and United Way of Greater Nashville. “It’s a privilege to help champion the overall health and well-being of families through United for Healthy Starts,” said Joanne Pulles, vice president of community engagement at HCA Healthcare and president of the HCA Healthcare Foundation. “Meaningful community impact can be made when organizations come together to support and learn from one another. We are excited and expect to see a positive influence from this United Way initiative across the country, as we work together to help give communities healthier tomorrows.” United for Healthy Starts aims to increase access to services to improve social, economic and overall health outcomes for families. Through this new grant, the initiative is designed to help families have strong, healthy starts through home visitation and wrap-around services tailored to the needs of each family supported. By establishing a national, collaborative learning community, United for Healthy Starts will also work to help create new nonprofit partnerships, with the intention of strengthening service delivery and innovation and achieving a scalable impact beyond the grant. Across HCA Healthcare, our burn and wound care specialists collaborate to bring state-of-the-art, compassionate care to our patients and their families. Across HCA Healthcare’s 11 American Burn Association-recognized Burn Centers in 11 states, our multispecialty burn care teams ensure patients receive the most appropriate and effective treatments available to help them heal and recover. One year after an accidental fire changed his life, HCA Healthcare patient and burn survivor David Johnson returned to TriStar Skyline Medical Center to thank the team members who cared for him. In fall of 2023, David was working in his garage when a spark from a propane heater ignited clothes and hand sanitizer in the back pocket of his overalls. He sustained burn injuries on 17% of his body and required emergency air transport. David was brought to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, equipped with a Level I Trauma Center and nationally recognized specialists with extensive burn experience. David spent 46 days in the Nashville, Tennessee hospital where colleagues, from the burn intensive care unit to rehabilitation, supported David every step of the way. “I’ve been at many hospitals, but this is one of the only places where I’ve actually felt at home,” David said. “People here genuinely care—from the nursing staff to rehab to housekeeping. We really got to know everyone like family.” Learn more about David’s journey and join us in thanking our burn and wound care colleagues for providing hope and healing: https://bit.ly/4bXe0UR. #CareLikeFamily #HealthierTomorrows

“If I had more kidneys to donate, I would do it all over again, even for strangers,” shared Itzel Guzman after giving her father the gift of life through a living kidney donation. “The process was smooth and the hospital staff made everything worth it.” HCA Healthcare patient Juan Guzman lived with untreated diabetes for years. In 2022, severe symptoms led to a diagnosis of stage 5 kidney failure, the most advanced form of chronic kidney disease. Juan sought expert care at HCA Healthcare affiliate Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant, which is equipped with the largest living kidney donor transplant program in the nation. Juan was placed on dialysis and needed a lifesaving kidney transplant. His daughter Itzel wanted to help and soon began the evaluation process to determine her eligibility to be his donor — she was a match. The San Antonio, Texas hospital care team guided Juan and Itzel through every step of the transplant process. Soon after the successful kidney transplant, Juan was walking and full of life once again. Itzel extends her gratitude to Luke Shen, MD, surgical director of kidney transplant at Methodist Healthcare System, for his skill and compassion during their journey. She notes that her father’s recovery was nothing short of extraordinary. As a leader in living donor kidney transplants, HCA Healthcare performed more than 350 live kidney donor transplants in 2024. Thank you to our dedicated transplant team members across HCA Healthcare who help give patients like Juan a second chance at life.
