Each year, thousands of students begin a new school year without the essential supplies needed to create the proper framework for learning. Teachers often reach into their own pockets to fill this gap, sometimes spending up to $750 of their own money to fund supplies for their classrooms, according to the National Education Association. As a part of HCA Florida Healthcare’s “We Show Up for Our Schools” month of service, our colleagues collected and donated more than 22,000 individual school items and other necessary classroom items to support teachers and students across Florida. In support of the month-long service initiative, HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues organized school supply drives, filled backpacks, donated bicycles, volunteered for campus beautification projects, donated to area teacher supply stores and much more. “At HCA Florida Healthcare, we are committed to caring for and improving human life, and this coordinated effort is another step toward fulfilling that mission,” shared Denise Kendust, AVP of community engagement for HCA Healthcare’s North Florida Division. “Our annual ‘We Show Up for Our Schools’ initiative is a meaningful way for our colleagues to give back to the communities where we live and work. The supplies we collect ensure teachers have the resources they need to accelerate learning and the students in our communities can stay healthy and focus on learning.” To learn more about the impact of the annual “We Show Up for Our Schools” initiative, visit https://bit.ly/3MLAxZ3. #PositiveImpact #HCACares

In times of emergencies and large-scale disasters, HCA Healthcare applies our scale and experience to ensure continuity of care so that patients and communities can continue to rely on us. Ahead of the 2024 hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, HCA Healthcare held an annual enterprise-wide hurricane readiness briefing to update and equip hospitals. So far, this hurricane season has brought six named storms – including this week’s Hurricane Francine – and the earliest Category 5 storm on record. ?“With planning and preparation, HCA Healthcare is able to stay at the ready to care for our colleagues and patients and respond to what we expect to be a more active 2024 hurricane season,” said Mike Wargo, vice president and chief of HCA Healthcare’s Enterprise Emergency Operations. “It’s not a matter of ‘if’ a hurricane or tropical storm will make landfall near or impact one of our hospitals, but ‘when.’ It’s our job to ensure we have the infrastructure and systems in place to ensure seamless, uncompromised patient care.” As soon as the HCA Healthcare’s Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC) identifies potential hurricane events, they mobilize to help provide affected hospitals with resources continue providing care. On “HCA Healthcare Today,” learn more about how our EEOC supports patients, colleagues and communities amid extreme weather events: https://bit.ly/3zfOvz6. #HCAEmergencyOperations

Transformational change in the healthcare space requires positive influence, the right science and strategic resources, but most importantly, listening to the voices of our care team members. HCA Healthcare’s department of Care Transformation and Innovation (CT&I) is continuously working to innovate and develop healthcare solutions that improve the care experience for both patient and provider. Fundamental to the success of any CT&I technology or process initiative is partnering with our clinicians, keeping their voices front and center. For Laura Bermudez, formative experiences throughout her life ingrained in her a deep appreciation for different people and perspectives. This laid the foundation for her future with HCA Healthcare as associate vice president of change management and communications for our department of Care Transformation and Innovation (CT&I). Among the growing list of innovative technology solutions currently supported by Laura’s team are Timpani, Augmedix Go and Nurse Handoff. In our “Meet the Innovators” blog series, learn about how Laura is contributing to healthcare transformation: https://bit.ly/4d3luoi. #UnlockPossibilities #CareTransformation

Dedication, strength and compassion are what set HCA Healthcare colleagues like Gloria Hinojos apart.?For five remarkable decades, Gloria has been a steadfast presence at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, positively impacting the lives of thousands of patients and colleagues. In the early 1970s, Gloria began her healthcare career in a nursing home as a nurse aide caring for Holocaust survivors. In 1974, Gloria joined the Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center family as a nurse aide before transitioning into the role of a medical/surgical unit secretary in 1975 and eventually a surgery scheduler in 1986. Driven to advance her healthcare career, Gloria pursued additional education in 1990 to become a surgical technician, a role in which she directly supported surgeons and patients before, during and after procedures in the operating room (OR). In the following years, Gloria’s passion to care for others in the OR inspired her to pursue her nursing degree. Unfortunately, that dream came to a halt when Gloria was diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma. Lymphoma is a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system. Upon her cancer diagnosis, Gloria’s colleagues became her care team. “I went through 2 years of chemotherapy and my coworkers and doctors gave me comfort and support I never would have expected,” shared Gloria. “This was truly the best time working here at the hospital.” During her treatment, Gloria’s OR colleagues also participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life cancer walk in her honor. Gloria is now 15 years cancer free and is back in the OR. Her love of learning and new technology remains, including recently witnessing the hospital’s first histotripsy, a pioneering non-invasive liver tumor treatment. Please join us in thanking Gloria for 50 years of dedicated service! This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we also extend our gratitude to our oncology colleagues who compassionately care for our patients, like Gloria, with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders. #CareLikeFamily #BloodCancerAwarenessMonth

Four months ago, HCA Healthcare patient Justine Carter began to experience sudden onset chest pain, shortness of breath and nausea during her treadmill workout. Justine, a 33-year-old wife and mother of two, was home alone with her four-year-old son. Due to the symptoms she was experiencing, Justine immediately called her husband who rushed home. Justine’s mother-in-law, Teresa., also hurried to her side. Justine would later learn that she was experiencing a rare heart attack sparked by a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). The inner layer of Justine’s artery had unexpectedly torn, and resulted in the swelling of her artery’s wall and obstructed vital blood flow. In those critical moments, every action mattered. Upon arriving to the scene, Teresa, a nurse at HCA Healthcare’s Mountain View Hospital, Payson, UT, immediately began CPR. Santaquin Fire and EMS arrived within minutes and took over chest compressions while administering on-the-scene care. Their tireless efforts, including multiple shocks with an automated external defibrillator (AED), were crucial in reviving Justine’s heartbeat — after 25 intense minutes. EMS transferred Justine to Mountain View Hospital, where she spent several days in the ICU on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. Clinicians at the hospital, which is accredited for Chest Pain Care by the American College of Cardiology, worked diligently to preserve Justine’s brain function and to facilitate her recovery. Thanks to her care team’s expertise and the swift action of Justine’s mother-in-law and first responders who quickly provided resuscitation efforts, Justine made a remarkable recovery. 25 years ago, Jereme Peterson and Angelina Attaway were high school classmates. The two recently reconnected in an extraordinary way when Angelina gave Jereme the gift of life through a living donor kidney transplant. Today, they share a lifelong bond. HCA Healthcare patient Jereme was on dialysis for three years and was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease, which occurs when a kidney can no longer function on its own. When Angelia learned on social media that Jereme was in need of a living kidney donor, she jumped at the chance to save a life -- especially one of a childhood friend. When Angelia found out she was a match to be Jereme’s kidney donor, she flew from their home state of Florida to the Medical City Dallas Transplant Institute for the surgery. The Medical City Healthcare hospital provides specialized organ transplants for patients in need of kidney, pancreas, liver and multi-organ transplants. Angelina hoped to be Jereme’s anonymous living kidney donor but it was happenstance that the two of them bumped into each other when pre-registering before their surgeries. Jereme and Angelina hugged, shared a few laughs — and then Jereme asked, “Why are you here all the way from Florida?” Angelina replied, “I’m your donor.” Today, Jereme is thankful to have another chance at life through organ donation thanks to a successful robotic kidney transplant. “I just hope other people will know how incredible of a gift this is and consider being organ donors,” he shared. “It’s given me my life back.” Thank you to our highly skilled transplant teams across HCA Healthcare who care for patients, like Jereme and Angelina, through every step of their transplant journey. Learn more about Jereme’s story: https://bit.ly/3yX8ouF.
