Jhon Correa knows what it means to #CareLikeFamily. He used to work at our HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in IT and has since moved on to a larger IT role within HCA Florida Healthcare - no longer based at our hospital. However, Jhon was recently seen roaming our hallways… “We are always excited to welcome special beginnings in Women’s Services and are especially thrilled that Jhon trusted us to care for his family during this special event in their lives,” said Stacy Carter, Director of Women’s Services at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital. “It has been our pleasure to care for mom Celia, their 15-year-old son Payton, their newest edition, Santiago, and of course Jhon.” Congratulations to the Correa family on baby Santiago who was born a few days ago weighing in at 5 pounds and 3 oz, and 18 inches long. 71-year-old Felton Brown attended a recent HCA Florida Healthcare sponsored WJCT Lunch and Learn to hear surgeon Dr. Steve Webb speak on GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Little did he know that a few months later, he would become a patient of Dr. Webb to correct his GERD condition. “Dr. Webb did something called a Toupet Fundoplication which is a surgical procedure to provide a barrier between my throat and my stomach to prevent belching up acid. Basically, he helped me stop any acid reflux from coming up my throat. An awful condition to have but today, I’m feeling like a new man! It was a huge life changing procedure. I no longer have GERD and I no longer have heart burn. I am also no longer taking any medications to help reduce previous symptoms. I cannot thank Dr. Webb enough. He was very good about explaining everything to me. I never felt uncomfortable. It was the easiest decision I’ve made. Kwame Avery enjoys his job by being a team player working behind the scenes in our Environmental Services Department as a project floor tech. He works to protect patients, colleagues and our community, by keeping our facility clean and safe. But he has a hidden talent of story crafting as an author of multiple books as well as being a mentor to children at his church. Kwame has written about 20 books on self-help, inspiration and guides to help people navigate a way out of their social and domestic problems at home. His books are featured on Amazon. More importantly, he shares his rich values and inspiration with everyone he meets at the hospital! Based on his family life experiences and relationships, he began writing eight years ago when he felt he had enough content to share with those wanting to be inspired and motivated about life. His favorite book so far is called Family Feud because it provided a way to share his parent’s divorce and how he has come through the challenges of a broken family. He hopes that his books will help many adult kids still living with their parents to become more independent and self-sufficient – like he has done for himself. As a clinical support coordinator, Antoinette Roy helps fresh out of school nurses or new nurses to HCA teaching the necessary skills as they transition into their permanent nursing roles. She was recently seen doing yoga in our private staff courtyard; “I always take a break and try to do a little yoga to find time for myself – amidst our busy schedules and the time we spend with patients – it’s perfect me time. I’ve been a nurse for 10 years and spent most of it in the ICU and yoga helps with mind, body strengthening and my general well-being. Plus, I just enjoy it!" Antoinette started yoga about five years ago and she has found that it has helped reduce some of the aches and pains of lifting patients and given her more flexibility in dealing with any potential challenges of the job, including helping her believe in herself more. “My friends and colleagues should try it…it is a fun and great way to shed any workday emotions and to celebrate life.” HCA provides multiple spaces throughout the hospital for our staff to find ways to relax during their breaks including a relaxation room, courtyard and a fitness center that is open 24-7. #healthiertomorrows
