  • No one likes to talk about colorectal cancer. But if you’re 45 or older, experts recommend that you get regular screenings. Start with these screening guidelines from Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare – our larger health network. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States (excluding skin cancers), according to the American Cancer Society. In its early stages, colorectal cancer often has no symptoms – that’s why screening is so important. Talk to your doctor about which screening test is right for you. • No one expects to hear the words, “You have cancer.” Christina certainly didn’t expect it in her late 40s. But last November, her life changed forever when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Christina’s story is a powerful reminder that colorectal cancer doesn’t always come with obvious symptoms, and it’s not just a disease that affects older adults. In fact, cases are on the rise among younger people, making early screening more important than ever. "My health has always been a top priority, but I never realized how important it is to have a good team in your corner. Dr. Bahna not only educated us about my diagnosis but also served as an inspiring role model for her residents. Her ability to blend patient care with teaching was remarkable. With the determination of Dr. Bahna and her team, I was able to get my surgery completed in record time. HCA Florida JFK Hospital and Palm Beach Colorectal Surgery guided me every step of the way. I know how easy it can be to make excuses, to push it off just one more month, and not make time for yourself. After all, I was in good shape and had no obvious symptoms! My message to you: Get screened! If my story helps even one person prioritize themselves, that’s a win for me. You have an amazing team here backing you up. I am grateful to this organization for all their support in beating this horrible disease. Dr. Bahna and team, my husband, family, friends, employer and their wellness program, are all part of why I am going to live a longer and even healthier, CANCER FREE life.” Christina’s journey is a testament to the power of early detection, a supportive care team, and the courage to prioritize your health. Let’s honor her story by spreading awareness and encouraging our loved ones to get screened.
