Attending #HIMSS25 for the first time was an eye-opening experience! After eight years in the industry, primarily focused on laboratory interoperability and data, diving into the broader world of interoperability was both exciting and humbling. Here are some of my ??? takeaways: ?? The laboratory’s voice in interoperability Much of the conversation centered on payor-provider data exchange and patient access, but I was surprised by how little focus there was on the role of laboratories. Testing outcomes and patient well-being depend on seamless data flow—labs should be a strategic asset in the healthcare system! ??? AI is gaining momentum, but there's a long road ahead It was inspiring to see so many companies exploring AI-driven solutions to enhance healthcare at the Exhibitor Hall. While the potential is enormous, AI in healthcare is still in its early stages, with challenges around data quality, user adoptability, and real-world implementation. There’s still a long road ahead to refine these technologies and integrate them effectively into clinical workflows. That said, it’s exciting to see the groundwork being laid and real progress being made! ?? Interoperability comes with responsibility Every day, our industry facilitates the movement of millions of patient records. With this comes a profound duty to safeguard sensitive information and uphold the highest standards of data security. We must lead the charge in cybersecurity and champion the minimum necessary rule—ensuring data is accessed and shared responsibly to protect patient privacy while enabling better care. Excited to bring these insights back to my work and continue advocating for the laboratory’s place at the interoperability table!
