  • Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Dhaima Burgess HazTek Safety Professional Dhaima Burgess emigrated to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica in August 2014. She decided to make this move to be with her ex-husband who worked as a construction safety professional. Dhaima has a bachelor’s degree in education which she obtained in Jamaica and worked as a teacher in elementary in secondary schools for ten years. She chose to seek a job in the education field to make it easier to find an open position and worked as a University instructor in elementary and middle schools and provided students with direct academic support. She wanted to work in the construction safety industry though — and had five years of experience in Jamaica working in safety — but did not have any construction experience, making it hard to break into this field. Dhaima’s drive to become a part of the construction industry came after constantly being belittled and told by her husband to get a “real job” — those words became her motivation. She studied and received her OSHA 30 certification, and through that received her first construction job in 2015. From there, Dhaima went back to school to get a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health administration and sought after more jobs in the construction industry. Since then, she has worked on several construction projects where she has not only helped companies to create safety policies and procedures but also helped to facilitate a culture of safety. Dhaima furthered her studies and went on to receive her master’s in legal studies with emphasis in business law. She is scheduled to take the Certified Safety Professional exam this April. “Today I am a proud single mother of three boys with a ‘real job’ and a graduate safety practitioner (GSP),” says Dhaima. “Thank you HazTek for seeing my worth and believing in me. For the women out there, who are thinking about joining the construction field, I would say to follow your heart and don’t listen to the naysayers. Though this is a male dominated field, just know that whatever they can do, we can do it better!” Thank you to Dhaima for the drive, passion, and education for the safety industry that she brings to our organization. • Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Connie Rogers AS EHS, CHST, STSC, LSP, CSM HazTek Safety Professional Connie Rogers has been in the construction industry for over 20 years now, starting in this field after her children were grown. Her husband of 46 years, Mark, traveled 9 months out of the year as a general foreman and assistant superintendent. Connie didn't want to be home alone, so, she asked her husband to help her get a job with him. Mark told her that he would help her get her first job, but after that it was up to her. Connie’s education started with an OSHA 10-hour and an OSHA 30-hour, along with her Emergency Medical Technician training. Her first experience was working in power plants for heavy industrial boiler outages. She started working with the boilermakers because there were no openings in the safety department then. Within two weeks, a safety position opened and that was the start of her safety career. For the first few years, Connie continued to work with pipefitters; the tool room; and taking care of payroll, time, accounts payable, and procurement. She learned more each day, while also moving back and forth into her safety rolls as the need arose. Connie feels that her experience has given her a better perspective of what working in the field entails. Connie has also worked on projects for paper mills, data centers, and pharmaceuticals. Her break came when she was given the opportunity to become a full-time safety manager for the new construction of a power plant. Understanding how important it was for her to keep learning, she obtained her OSHA 510; OSHA 500; her Licensed Safety Professional certificate; and other certifications including scaffolds, silica, CPR, AED, and NFPA 70E. Connie has also earned her CHST and STSC certifications through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and she is now still studying and planning for her ASP. Ultimately, she earned her associate degree in environmental health and safety. Connie’s advice for women who are considering going into construction safety: “If you’re asking if this business is hard for a woman, I would say yes. But as you grow and continue to educate yourself, you will be better prepared to answer when the call comes to make those important decisions. Always remember to build relationships with the folks working in the field — with that you will receive the respect and trust of those folks you are looking to protect.” Thank you to Connie for all of the experience and dedication that she brings to our organization. • Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Valorie Boccia HazTek Safety Professional Valorie Boccia?joined HazTek in 2024. Valorie’s interest is safety started in junior college, where she took 2 courses that stuck with her throughout the years. After working in different fields, she decided to go back to school and earned her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health. Valorie continued to work in different fields after graduating, but after a few years, she received an opportunity to work as a safety professional on a semiconductor job site. Some highlights from working in the safety industry include when she wins over a crew and gets them to buy in on safety. Valorie also enjoys the?camaraderie, building cohesion with those in the field, and the witty banter that can come from that. Another highlight for her is a two-fold component?—?having enough influence to get people to have a moment where they actually think like a safety professional, and those that have made her learn how to be safer. Valorie’s advice for any women looking to get into safety is this: “Don’t give up. Let the naysayers’ words fall on deaf ears. Safety wins in the end every time. Be passionate and steadfast but also approachable and open to opportunities that allow for work to be done, even if it may require a reroute to getting the job complete. There’s almost always another way to get things done, it just requires being innovative at times.” Thank you to Valorie for the positive attitude and dedication that she brings to our organization.
