World Mental Health Day | October 10, 2024 ? October 10th?is World?Mental Health Day with the overall objective to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. The day provides an opportunity for all?of those?working on mental health issues to talk about their work and?identify?what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. ? This World Mental Health Day, World Health Organization (WHO) is uniting with partners to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work. Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health. Unhealthy conditions including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment and other poor working conditions, can pose significant risks, affecting mental health, overall quality of life and consequently participation or productivity at work. With 60% of the global population in work, urgent action is needed to ensure work prevents risks to mental health and protects and supports mental health at work. It is essential for governments, employers, the organizations which represent workers and employers, and other stakeholders responsible for workers’ health and safety to work together to improve mental health at work. Action to address mental health at work should be done with the meaningful involvement of workers and their representatives, and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions. By investing efforts and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions at work, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive at work and in life.? ?? Fire Prevention Week October 6 – 12, 2024 Each year, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) sponsors Fire Prevention Week in October. This year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Here are key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines: ·??????Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home ·??????Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button? ·??????Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested The NFPA provides resources that can help you prepare in the event of a fire. October is?National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, the vital role of substance abuse prevention for individual health and to remember those who have lost their lives to substance abuse. The Office of National Drug Control Policy encourages prevention efforts this month and all year long to help those suffering with substance abuse. It is?also a time to acknowledge those in recovery, as well as children, parents, family, and friends supporting them. ? Millions of Americans suffer from substance abuse, which includes underage drinking, alcohol dependency, non-medical use of prescription drugs, abuse of over-the-counter medications, and illicit drug use.?Those with demanding jobs, such as workers in the construction field, are more susceptible to substance abuse issues. The stress of the job can lead to excessive drinking and drug use.? ?
