BreatheWay? eliminates the need for ice when shipping broccoli ?? Hazel's modified atmosphere packaging platform, BreatheWay, maintains broccoli quality using patented membrane technology just well as traditional ice slurry transit solutions. In addition to reducing shipping weight and costs, BreatheWay cuts down on food safety concerns when compared to ice. "One of the benefits of going iceless is a reduced food safety risk, as water is usually a carrier of pathogens. Eliminating the use of liquid ice slurry can reduce that risk," says Malkeet Padda, VP of Postharvest Operations at Hazel Technologies. In 2024, the Hazel Breatheway team partnered with a leading melon shipper, where product was shipped from Central America to Japan. After 46 days of storage, transit, and evaluation, Harper melons packed in Breatheway packaging showed an 86 percent improvement in surface mold, 91 percent improvement in sunken spots, and 44 percent improvement in chilling injury compared to the customer's existing MAP bags.
