This new effort, made possible through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, marks a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing development and economic growth. The project will involve the renovation of the exterior of the shopping center, offering business owners the opportunity to enhance the appearance of their businesses at no cost. The City of Hawthorne views this project as a key component in the reconstruction of the area, which is undergoing substantial development. As a major gateway into Hawthorne, the Crenshaw Village project not only supports local businesses, but also positions the City for future economic growth. The City of Hawthorne, in collaboration with Republic Services and Martinez Landscape, held a Community Clean-Up event on Saturday, March 15th. Volunteers came to the Betty Ainsworth Sports Center parking lot to gather equipment and get into groups before being sent to various locations around the community to help pick up trash and bulky items to help clean up our community. A Black History Month Celebration was held on Friday, February 28th at City Hall. Around 30 individuals were recognized for their contributions and accomplishments in Hawthorne and beyond, including Hawthorne's first ever African-American Mayor, City Treasurer, and more! The event included colorguard from American Legion Auxiliary Jackie Robinson Unit 252, which is an all black women group, and also included two singers, Abidun (Abi) Koya and Eiress Wick who sang some beautiful songs.
