This year, we celebrated a milestone—30 years of HawkWatch International monitoring the raptor migration at Bonney Butte HawkWatch! Thanks to support from the Kinsman Foundation, we celebrated alongside you with a day of hawkwatching and a night of raptor trivia. We hope you had a great season visiting us in Oregon this fall. See you next year!

Conserving raptors and our shared environment
关于我们
Our ecosystems are in crisis. Since 1986, HawkWatch International (HWI) has been finding solutions by studying raptors with on-the-ground science and creating informed communities by engaging them with the natural world. Our mission is to conserve our environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. Our team leads over 20 different projects from Alaska to Arizona, and from Argentina to Djibouti. We share this information with state and federal wildlife managers to guide conservation plans and protect sensitive species, and with the private sector to balance development with the need for wildlife conservation. We are also committed to engaging with communities across the country through our education and outreach programs and our numerous community science projects. We believe that raptor conservation requires scientific engagement from and with the community at large. HWI’s programs also help build and shape scientists through education, outreach, internships, volunteer programs, and seasonal employment opportunities for young professionals.

Balancing the expansion of wind energy with conservation, an innovative assessment tool is helping wind farm developers minimise avifaunal impact, while streamlining wind farm development. Meet Megan Murgatroyd from HawkWatch International, who created the Verreaux's Eagle Risk Assessment (VERA) model to provide more accurate guidance on where to safely place wind turbines, based on accurate data around the Eagle's flight patterns and behaviour. Having worked with Megan on the development of wind farms in Beaufort West, Red Cap recognised VERA as an essential part of environmental impact assesments that are effective in protecting local wildlife and ensuring the sustainable development of wind energy. Read more about Megan, and how VERA can benefit all stakeholders in the development process here:

How do you teach others about the importance of wildlife? At HawkWatch International, we believe education is one of the most important conservation actions we can take. The past few years we have prioritized closing the nature gap by bringing nature to audiences who would not otherwise have access due to physical or economic barriers. Thank you to our sponsors who help us offer more of these programs for free...
