Despite their large size, Secretarybirds can be surprisingly hard to find. Their populations are low, and their nests are elusive. In 2023, HWI’s Dr. Meg Murgatroyd began fieldwork monitoring this Endangered species in the southernmost part of their range—the Western Cape of South Africa. We are excited to share that we’ve begun the first-ever study tracking the movement of adult Secretarybirds! Click here to hear a firsthand account from Meg about her time in the field: https://lnkd.in/g4VjNA6p This bird was handled for the purpose of scientific research under a Bird Banding Permit and in accordance with all local permitting requirements. ??: Ankia van der Merwe #hawkwatchinternational #hawkwatch #raptors #birdsofprey #conservation #ornithology #birding #birdwatching #secretarybird #southafrica #africa #fieldwork #raptorphotography #birdphotography #wildlifephotography

Conserving raptors and our shared environment
关于我们
Our ecosystems are in crisis. Since 1986, HawkWatch International (HWI) has been finding solutions by studying raptors with on-the-ground science and creating informed communities by engaging them with the natural world. Our mission is to conserve our environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. Our team leads over 20 different projects from Alaska to Arizona, and from Argentina to Djibouti. We share this information with state and federal wildlife managers to guide conservation plans and protect sensitive species, and with the private sector to balance development with the need for wildlife conservation. We are also committed to engaging with communities across the country through our education and outreach programs and our numerous community science projects. We believe that raptor conservation requires scientific engagement from and with the community at large. HWI’s programs also help build and shape scientists through education, outreach, internships, volunteer programs, and seasonal employment opportunities for young professionals.

Is the health of eagles weighing on your mind? Us too. That is why we’ve put out over fifteen Passive Perch Scales across Utah to learn more about how Golden Eagles are doing in the winter. This research is possible thanks to funding from the?Great Salt Lake Audubon?that helped us refurbish and create new scales for this field season. We are so grateful for their ongoing support of this essential research! ?? : Camera set by Cody Allen

“You should never underestimate an audience's intelligence, but you should always underestimate their vocabulary.” - Dr. David Shiffman As scientists, we often use niche terms in our publications that help us accurately describe our research, but that can make our findings inaccessible to the general public. That’s the value of science educators. On the blog, HWI’s educator Renata Vazquez shares how our education team goes about translating those big and often hard-to-understand topics to everyone, from adults to 4th graders alike: https://lnkd.in/gRQmvTPi This bird is handled under a special use permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service for the purpose of science education. ??: Alta Ski Area, Rocko Menzyk
