TOUCHDOWN! ?? Our KHON2 Super Puppy Bowl puppy predictors called it - the Philadelphia Eagles soared to victory in Super Bowl LIX, just as our furry forecasters anticipated! Mahalo nui loa to our amazing friends at KHON2 News and the Living808 team - especially host, John Veneri, and producers, Kylie Guieb and Kristen Kumakura - for making the 2nd Annual KHON2 Super Puppy Bowl an incredible success! This year's adorable roster included VIP (Very Important Paws) dogs, plus a show-stopping halftime performance featuring our star, Greased Lightnin the sulcata tortoise, and bunny sensation, Twix, the lionhead mix rabbit! Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Lynn and Jim Lally, who covered all adoption fees during our Big Game Adoption Blitz, we're overjoyed to announce that 30 pets found loving homes that day alone! Special congratulations to our Super Puppy Bowl stars who scored their own families: Touchdown Bella, Greased Lightnin, Donatello, Twix, Red Zone Ruby, and Mele Mikey! Opportunities like these aren't just fun - they help to elevate and raise awareness for pet adoption and other ways that the community can support pets in need, like fostering, volunteering or donating. Together, we're changing lives, one adoption at a time. Mahalo for helping us create these heartwarming success stories! #HawaiianHumane #KHON2 #Living808 #SuperPuppyBowl

At Hawaiian Humane Society, we are honored to have both active military service members, reservists and veterans as dedicated volunteers and staff. Today - and every day - we celebrate their continued spirit of service for O?ahu's animals in needs and our community. Hear directly from our veteran volunteers and employees about how their military experience has shaped their passion for animal welfare. From the frontlines to the shelter, their commitment to service never wavers. We are grateful to all who have worn the uniform, and we're proud to have them as part of our Hawaiian Humane??ohana. Your valor, discipline and compassion are an inspiration to us all. #HawaiianHumane #VeteransDay

Happy Howl-o-ween from our ‘ohana to yours! Halloween is a time of festive fun, but it can be ghoulish for pets who may not understand that treats for people can be toxic for them or that costumes are not a threat. We encourage pet owners to take these precautions to keep their furry (or feathered/scaled) pets safe and stress-free: ? No tricks or (people) treats: Ensure candy and human treats are kept out of reach of pets. Chocolate and foods that contain xylitol are toxic for pets. ? Prepare for fireworks and festivities: Based on last year's experiences, we recommend preparing for unexpected illegal fireworks in addition to typical Halloween activities. Keep in mind that strangers in costumes, frequent doorbell ringing and door knocks can cause anxiety for even the most well-socialized pet. ? Pet costumes aren't for everyone: Your pet's comfort should be your top priority, so if your pet seems anxious in a costume, consider a festive collar or bandana instead. If they are comfortable wearing clothes, ensure the costume is not constricting and allows full mobility. ? Be mindful of decorations: Do not leave your pets unsupervised around Halloween decorations and ensure wires and cables are kept out of reach. ? Secure indoor space is essential: Given the possibility of both Halloween activities and illegal fireworks, keeping your pet indoors is crucial. Leave a radio or television on at normal volume to provide familiar and comforting sounds if you leave your house. If you can't keep your pet indoors, consider keeping them in an enclosed garage. Animals may panic and escape a yard, even if fenced, especially when startled by unexpected fireworks and loud noises. ? Microchip and ID tags can save your pet's life: Ensure that your pets have proper identification. In Hawai?i, pets are required by law to be microchipped, and a collar with a tag noting your current phone number is also highly recommended. For pets that are already microchipped, make sure your current contact information is registered with the manufacturer of your pet's chip or a free database like 24PetWatch.com. ? If you have lost your pet: Immediately file a Lost Pet Report at https://lnkd.in/gFTcyYjB or call the Hawaiian Humane Society at 808-356-2250. Ensure you have clear, current photos of your pet, your pet's microchip number, proof of ownership and details on where/when they were most recently seen. These details can help to reunite you with your pet that much quicker. ? If you find a lost pet: Immediately file a Found Pet Report on https://lnkd.in/gFTcyYjB and take the pet to a private veterinary clinic to be scanned for a microchip. If you are able to care for the pet on your own, the Hawaiian Humane Society will work with you to reunite the pet with their owner. If you are unable to temporarily care for the pet, you can bring them to the Hawaiian Humane Society's Pet Kōkua Admissions Center at our Mō?ili?ili or Kosasa Family campuses.

In the past two weeks, the Hawaiian Humane Society has seen an alarming increase in positive cases of canine parvovirus (CPV) and feline panleukopenia (FPV) incoming to our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho?opili, particularly among puppies and kittens. These highly contagious diseases are spread through fecal contamination and cause severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and immune system suppression. They can be fatal if left untreated. All dogs/cats brought into the Hawaiian Humane Society’s campuses receive species-specific vaccinations upon admission to protect against CPV/FPV and other diseases. However, please note that most animals entering the shelter system have not received routine vaccinations before coming in, and vaccinations take time to become effective. The added stress of the shelter environment makes them more vulnerable to contagious diseases. “One pet entering the shelter with community-acquired disease can rapidly spread that disease to other animals, even before symptoms develop,” said Dr. Becca Boronat, National Shelter Medicine Veterinarian at Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national animal welfare organization, working to save the lives of cats and dogs in America’s shelters by 2025. “Shelters can take every appropriate precaution to reduce infectious disease but are still not immune to outbreaks. The very conditions necessitated by traditional animal sheltering predispose pets to illness.” "What's happening in the shelters reflects what's happening in the community. Therefore, the solution also lies in the community," emphasizes Dr. Boronat. "We implore everyone to step up and help get as many healthy pets adopted or into foster homes as possible and to play a role in reducing shelter intake now and in the future." Our shelter will remain open for adoptions, fostering and resources, but with stricter disease prevention protocols. To find out how you can make a difference, see our comment below. Mahalo for your kōkua and compassion.

With our shelters facing a critical situation and capacity stretched thin, foster volunteers are needed now more than ever! Our most urgent need is support fostering medium and large dogs not quite ready for adoption, like sweet Mama (shown here). Some dogs may have additional medical considerations that we will walk you through in advance. Thanks to the support of Best Friends Animal Society, the first 10 families who are matched with a medium or large dog and complete a 2-week foster period will also receive a $200 Visa gift card. Act quickly - if you're new to fostering, sign up today at https://lnkd.in/gvFPfNBF. We provide all of the training, supplies and veterinary care to support your foster during their stay with you.
