“Canada is the fourth largest oil producer in the world and Alberta is the country's biggest producer. Some 97% of the country's 4 million bpd of oil exports went to the U.S. in 2023 with several European nations and Hong Kong taking the remainder, according to Canada's energy regulator. Alberta supplied 87% of the oil exported from Canada to the U.S. in 2023.” https://lnkd.in/gGdpW7G4

Great news for EV drivers on Hawaii Island! We have completed construction at our Hilo office on the first of several fast-charging upgrades happening across the island! This upgrade replaces the original fast charger and adds a second one—doubling charging availability at the site. Two more upgrade projects are set for completion in March (Kona Office) and April (KTA Waimea), both of which will include the addition of a second fast charger, resulting in a total of three new fast chargers on Hawaii island. We are installing 50 kW Tritium fast chargers, designed for durability and featuring modular power architecture for enhanced reliability. This follows the recent upgrade at Costco Dillingham on Oahu, the fifth upgraded site on that island. Check out the full list of planned charging station upgrades here: https://lnkd.in/gNunveAM

The dress code may be “aloha crisp”, but it’s still business around the clock in Hawaii ???From?a?Sunday evening?Opening Reception at Australian Consul General Greg Wilcock’s Residence held in partnership with AmCham Australia. ???To a roundtable with the Hawaii State Energy Office, diving deep into Hawaii’s energy mix, investment opportunities, and energy security strategies. ???From thought-provoking discussions with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command on regional energy dynamics and defense priorities. ???To a?captivating hour-long keynote and Q&A from INDOPACOM Commander Admiral Paparo at the POST Conference, whose?insights into security and geopolitical challenges were nothing short of enlightening. (How refreshing to see a keynote speaker hop off the stage and walk around while taking questions from a 2000-strong audience!) Following the recent visits to Perth of INDOPACOM Commander Admiral Paparo, U.S. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force Commander Richard Seif and US Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Koehler, it has been valuable to catch up with US Navy leadership in their home base of Hawaii.

“Facts Global Energy estimates that without the Jones Act restrictions, which significantly add to the costs of building and operating vessels that comply with the Jones Act, the U.S. “could provide a secure and cost-effective source of [energy] supply for Hawai?i.” “Hawai?i already feels the effects of the Jones Act on its energy supply. Despite the U.S. being the top oil producer in the world — including the type preferred by Hawai?i’s sole refinery — foreign crude accounted for 83.9% of Hawai?i’s supply in 2024 through November, while domestic sources made up just 16.1%.” More in this article from Honolulu Civil Beat. https://lnkd.in/gmQVkdQM

“An unusual coalition of Hawai?i airline executives, farmers and ranchers, and fuel refineries is eyeing a new crop they hope will be almost as big to the islands as sugar was in its heyday. “House Bill 976 still needs to be scheduled and heard before Friday to have a chance at success. If it doesn’t succeed this time, the coalition said it will continue to try in years to come.” Honolulu Civil Beat reports. “Hawai‘i Grown” is funded in part by grants from the Stupski Foundation, Ulupono Fund at the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and the Frost Family Foundation. https://lnkd.in/gWNdi_DC

What is the role of state government in the challenge of Climate Change? The scientific consensus is that global warming of over two degrees Celsius will threaten human life as we know it. The Paris Agreement defines 1.5 degrees as a more desirable goal to limit the worst outcomes. Yet as of October, 2023, the planet’s average surface-temperature increase was already 1.4 degrees Celsius. We have to take action with our communities, our national governments, and at the state government level. Mark Glick, Chief Energy Officer at State of Hawai?i joins Bob Grove at Climate Hour to discuss the role of state government in addressing the challenge of climate change. Mark Glick served as senior advisor to the Texas Land Commissioner in the 1980s, where he helped pass landmark amendments to both the Texas Clean Air Act and the federal Clean Air Act. He then headed up operations and economic development for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and later served as Hawaii’s Energy Administrator during the formative years of the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative. In 2023, Mark was appointed Chief Energy Officer of the Hawaii State Energy Office. Hawaii’s clean energy initiative is recognized as a national and global policy trendsetter. Hawaii was first in the nation to establish a legally binding commitment to 100% renewable energy. And Hawaii adopted legislation in 2022 that requires the state to sequester more atmospheric carbon than emitted, achieving net-negative emissions no later than 2045.
