Founded as Hui Mālama i Nā Kūpuna ‘0 Hawai’i Nei (Hui Mālama), Hui Iwi Kuamo’o continues this kuleana (duties and responsibilities to care for the ancestors) as volunteers. Kalauao, O?ahu - Kūpa?a Grantee - Ho?ōla Hou iā Kalauao (@hoolahou.ia.kalauao) revives and brings life to Kalauao, an ahupua?a in the moku of ?Ewa on the island of O?ahu. Their vision is a thriving and abundant ?Ewa moku beginning with the ahupua?a of Kalauao. Recognizing the negative impacts of urban development and militarization on both our ?āina and kānaka of ?Ewa, the hui works to create and maintain kīpuka (places of calm, safety, and regeneration) where culture can thrive, food can be cultivated, and ?āina and kānaka can heal and be restored. Their mission is to restore identity and abundance to Kalauao by caring for ?āina; growing, preparing, and eating ancestral foods; and building community through education and the return to Native Hawaiian values and cultural practices. They are intentional to grow aloha ?āina who are both practitioners and advocates, equipped to engage politically as well as to mālama ?āina and kaiāulu.
