?????????????????? ???? ????????: ?????????? 23% of the young adults enrolled in Haven's Young Adult program (ages 18-24) have aged out of foster care.? Research indicates that between 11% and 36% of young adults who age out of the foster care system become homeless during their transition to adulthood. This highlights the critical need for comprehensive support systems to assist these young adults during this time. Haven for Hope's Young Adult program supports and connects young adults to services they need to transition to independent living. Some of these services include ID Recovery, Income, Skills & Development, Job Training, Case Management, Mental Health Services, GED prep, Spiritual Services, Permanent Supportive Housing, and so much more. Our former President & CEO, Kim Jefferies sat down with Robert Rivard to talk about the amazing work Haven for Hope does every day.

Host, bigcitysmalltown podcast | Co-Founder (Retired), San Antonio Report (formerly The Rivard Report)

San Antonio's approach to homelessness stands apart from other major cities. This week on?bigcitysmalltown, I sat down with?Kim Jefferies, who has led Haven for Hope since 2021 and will soon depart to establish a similar comprehensive homeless center in Las Vegas. Haven for Hope?has transformed over 53,000 lives since opening in 2010—enough people to fill the?Frost?Bank Center nearly three times. Yet many San Antonians don't realize the scale of this impact. What makes San Antonio's homeless response system unique: - 80 partner organizations working in coordination (40 on campus) - A collaborative approach unlike any other nonprofit sector - Weekly coordination calls that began during COVID and continue today - A balance of emergency shelter and housing-first approaches "We can't arrest away homelessness," Jeffries told me, highlighting the critical shortage of mental health and substance abuse treatment beds in our community. When the Nix Hospital and Texas Vista closed, we lost over 200 psychiatric beds—leaving our most vulnerable with nowhere to turn. The challenges are significant: - $30 million annual budget with 65% from government sources - Need for approximately 1,000 permanent supportive housing units - Critical shortage of substance abuse treatment for unfunded individuals - Growing gap between housing costs and wages What's most striking about Haven isn't just the numbers—it's the spirit. "There's this underlying spirit of gratitude and joy and lightheartedness that you would not expect for people who are down on their luck," Jeffries noted. As Las Vegas recruits Jeffries to replicate the Haven model with guaranteed operational funding, it raises an important question: Is San Antonio still committed to the innovative approach to homelessness that once made us a national model? On Friday afternoon my new team at Wells Fargo got to visit my old team at Haven for Hope for an afternoon of volunteering. David Huete, LMSW shared with us the services they provide the community. DJ Jackson made our event easy to plan, lined us up with some rewarding projects, and kept us motivated when we started to sweat. If you are looking to spend an afternoon serving with your team I highly recommend the expirence!

Behind the scenes of The Hope Connection Our newest video testimonial series continues at Haven for Hope with our South Campus clients. These 10-minute talks with our clients give them a chance to sit down and have real discussions about their experiences with homelessness and how Haven has helped them transform their life. Homelessness is not what we think it is, and breaking the stigma of something so complex takes love, compassion, and education. Take a few minutes out of your day to hear the stories of real people in our community. Special thanks to my amazing team: Emily Rodriguez for your assistance on set and Danny T. for the amazing portraits of our South Campus clients. #havenforhope #transforminglives #thehopeconnection #talktome

As we celebrate 15 years of service, we’re partnering with The Home Depot Foundation and 365 Connect Inc. to improve our campus and services to those experiencing homelessness. Over 600 volunteers will upgrade facilities this April, including assembling 70 bunk beds for women at our South Campus. While this shift slightly reduces sleeping capacity (mats to bunks), it enhances care — data shows clients in beds with increased engagement and case management are 4–5 times more likely to have a positive housing exit from Haven. To accommodate this new sleeping space and address the current overcapacity, staff will pause new South Campus enrollments for women. This will not include any woman experiencing homelessness for the first time, women ages 18-25 or 65 plus, or women with physical disabilities. We’re grateful for this opportunity to create a more dignified and transformative experience for our clients. Portraits of Hope: Constance The Hope Connection is a very special project for us and our client. It gives real people a chance to tell their stories in short, 10-minute talks and opens the audience up to the realities of homelessness. For this project, we were excited to bring on portrait artist and sports photographer, Danny Torres to photograph our South Campus clients right after their interviews. It was great to collaborate with such a talented artist and our clients loved the opportunity to have their photos taken on campus. Pictured here is Constance, whose full interview is currently available on our YouTube channel. Thank you, Danny, for your amazing artistry and for capturing these amazing moments in time. #havenforhope #thehopeconnection #tenminutetalks #talktome @DT2Ten
