    Last week, our team proudly took 3rd place in the Lending Tree Summit’s Innovation Challenge!     My favorite conversation today was around how the term PPE, or “Products and pricing engine”, is too restrictive a term for what these companies are truly able to do and empower. Not only do they streamline the arduous process of translating investor rulesets into tangible solutions that can be offered to prospective homeowners, but they are also able to serve as the connective tissue across the mortgage landscape when it comes to the buying and selling of loans and servicing rights. While I think several consumer solutions have been introduced to help win the customer-for-life battle, I think the true game changers will be the pricing engines and the technology that enables them.     So why should startups file a provisional patent on their technology anyway? Who even cares at such an early stage? Startups, especially those disrupting the technology landscape, are recognized for their nimbleness, innovation, and resourcefulness. In the whirlwind of building a company, protecting intellectual property can feel like a costly and time-consuming hurdle. But securing those game-changing ideas is critical for future success, and a provisional patent is a strategic first step. A provisional patent application, like the one Haven submitted today for our Haven Wallet platform, serves as a placeholder, securing a priority date for an invention. This is critical in the U.S., which operates on a "first-to-file" system for patent applications. Filing a provisional patent essentially declares to the world: “We were here first!”. This early marker can be a powerful tool when engaging in discussions about potential partnerships and collaborations. Haven Wallet facilitates seamless RESPA-compliant integration between mortgage servicers and originators, enabling secure data exchange and smooth servicing transfers, even towards allowing a borrower to refinance with a single click across multiple partners. This aligns with Haven's goal of being a technology provider that can partner with various companies across different market segments. This provisional patent submission, a year-long project I got to work on alongside Cole Murray, Srujan Routhu, Brian Milner, and Walter Zielenski, is a testament to the talent and dedication of our team. I think milestones like these embodies American innovation, showcasing our shared commitment to reshaping the mortgage industry and creating a future where technology empowers borrowers. Honestly my favorite part is how they even have exciting and motivating names like: "INTEGRATION PLATFORM FOR BIDIRECTIONAL COMMUNICATION WITH HETEROGENOUS NETWORKED SYSTEMS VIA AN INTEGRATED FRONTEND INTERFACE"
