Our expansion of the California College of the Arts (CCA) has been nominated for the ArchDaily 2025 Building of the Year Awards! ?? Vote now to support our nomination: https://lnkd.in/eYPT8_gp Founded during the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century, CCA now encompasses 34 art and design disciplines. Our new building helps establish a creative ecosystem, bringing students and faculty together across new art-making facilities, learning spaces, and green spaces. At ground level, a hub of indoor-outdoor workshops seamlessly connects to CCA’s existing main academic building. With flexible fabrication and maker spaces, the open plan encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and adapts to evolving needs, mediums, and technologies develop. Above, the new biodiverse landscape transforms this formerly hard-scaped corner of San Francisco into an inviting outdoor environment for students, faculty, and visitors. Emerging from the building’s base are two mass timber pavilions, which house classrooms, art studios, and exhibition galleries. Their deep balconies extend creative and social spaces outdoors, taking advantage of San Francisco’s mild climate while providing shade for interior spaces, improving overall energy performance. ??: Jason O'Rear TEF Design, Atelier Ten, Arup, MEYERS+ ENGINEERS, Surfacedesign, Inc., Lotus Water, PritchardPeck Lighting, Coffman Engineers, Thornton Tomasetti, Urban Design Consulting Engineers (UDCE), Hathaway Dinwiddie

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we at LMSA are grateful to have worked with a talented team on completing The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. Serving as the permanent home of the King Papers Project, which publishes the definitive collection of Dr. King’s writings, speeches, and correspondence, we are excited to see the Institute settle into their new space. Founded in 2005, the Institute expanded from the original Papers Project to include broader educational initiatives like the Liberation Curriculum for teachers, visiting scholar programs, and global outreach efforts. The Institute maintains the world’s largest online archive of previously inaccessible King materials and works to preserve and advance Dr. King’s legacy through research, education and public engagement. The redesign of the Institute aims to inspire a sense of awe for those who visit and work there, and to encourage exploration of the Institute’s work and engagement with Dr. King’s legacy. Completing this Design for Freedom by Grace Farms project continues to be a reminder that we all need to continually work on making our built environment and AEC industry more just and equitable. As a firm, one area on which we are focusing is the materials and construction, in an effort to daylight the need to end forced labor and unfair labor practices in our building materials supply chain and construction industry.
