Director of Programs at Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation

Last week I had the distinct honor of serving as the keynote speaker for the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce Women in Business annual luncheon. Huge thank-you to event extraordinaire Sarah Smith and the awesome team at the Marshalltown Chamber led by the amazing John Hall, CEcD. It was an afternoon of light and celebration - we talked a little about #authenticity in business and got a chance to recognize the very well-deserved 2024 Women in Business award winner, Janelle Carter (congratulations again, Janelle!). If you haven't been to Marshalltown recently, this is your reminder to go visit and see all of the great work taking place. (Bonus: make a stop at Lillie Mae Chocolates and you'll never want to leave... ????)

  • On February 15th we had the privilege of hosting Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham for the day in Marshalltown. The day started off at our Economic Outlook Breakfast where Director Durham outlined her economic development strategy for Iowa for 2024, detailed how Marshalltown can be ready to take advantage of new resources and tools, and helped us celebrate some of the great accomplishments in Marshalltown. We then took a tour of Marshalltown Company, a longtime legacy business that continues to invest and expand in Marshalltown, including be leaning into robotics and automation to keep them competitive with American Manufacturing. We then borrowed the Marshalltown Company Board Room to celebrate the site certification effort for a new 95-acre site, located north of Marion Street just east of JBS. This is the first certified site in Marshalltown, and considerable time, work, and resources were put forth to put Marshalltown on the map for large scale industrial recruitment. A big thank you to the folks at Alliant Energy, the City of Marshalltown, Marshalltown Water Works, and Heart of Iowa Communications for their help in completing this process. ? Next community leaders gathered for lunch at Wayward Social to hear from a number of folks about Linn Creek District. The Linn Creek District includes private investment like Crosby Park, Wayward Social, and eventually the development at Creekside Estates. It also includes four significant projects that received funding from the Destination Iowa program in 2023, including the Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse, Water Plaza, Trailhead, and Trail Bridge. It was a great opportunity to tell our story, discuss the progress on these projects and share with Debi that investment into this district has been in the works since 2007 with the Imagine Plan. Finally, we ended the day with a tour of the completed Willards/Hopkins buildings renovations, owner and developer Janelle Carter had the opportunity to show Director Durham the incredible progress that these two buildings have seen. Director Durham's organization provided significant financial resources and support that made these projects possible and kept these buildings alive in Marshalltown. No better way to end a project then with a celebratory ribbon cutting! Thank you to everyone who participated in the day, and to the incredible leadership in Marshalltown and Marshall County. It's clear that we are seeing significant projects that are moving the needle on economic development for our community and the momentum is building.

  • The Leadership Marshalltown (LM) January session was held at RACOM Corporation yesterday. The day consisted of a tour of RACOM as well as the Kansas Leadership Center curriculum session called Immunity to Change. The Immunity to Change session was an experiment that taught the LM class to get out of their comfort zone and learn how to manage themselves.
