#WednesdayBites Today, we’re opening with Nagraj—fondly known as Plog Raja, Plogman, Cupman, or as we call him, Raj! He’s our Program Head for Sustainability Initiatives tasked with developing solutions for helping change behavior, understanding what responsible waste management means, and creating awareness of how to live/operate sustainably as an individual, community, or organization.? Before you hit play on the video, here’s a glimpse into his inspiring journey. Raj’s passion for the environment started during a trek to Chikkamagalur, where he witnessed rampant #littering. Although he and his friends cleaned the space, the images of the trash stayed with him. Determined to make a difference, he decided to dedicate a few hours every week to preserving the environment. His commitment even inspired him to name his daughter Avni, Sanskrit for “Mother Earth.” Raj began participating in cyclothons, barefoot running, and tree plantations. On one such cyclothon, he noticed a group painting and beautifying the walls at Windsor Manor Bridge. When he asked why, one of the members shared, “If areas look clean and beautiful, people don’t want to litter. Clean areas inspire care, while dirty spaces invite more waste.” This insight sparked a thought in Raj. A thought to pick up the Trash! He initially started doing this at public parks and lakes mostly with his daughter and a few family members and friends. In 2016, Raj discovered the concept of plogging—picking up trash while jogging—and gave it an Indian twist, founding The Indian Ploggers Army. Since then, Raj and his team have completed an incredible 1,054 plogs! With over 16 years of corporate experience in FMCG and Building Materials, Raj transitioned from the corporate world to focus fully on environmental sustainability. Fluent in multiple languages and known for his playful sustainability slogans—like “Event ho ya habba, always carry your dabba!”—he inspires countless people online and offline. Raj is also a proud member of Solid Waste Management Roundtable ( SWMRT) and has also been featured on Lulu Mall’s Wall of Frames as one of Bengaluru’s 25 Sustainability Heroes. At Hasiru Dala Innovations Raj leads Sustainability Initiatives. When asked what excites him about working at HDI, he says, “Taking people on waste trails to our Material Recovery Facilities and Biogas Plants feels like an extension of a plog. It’s about understanding where our waste ends up, who manages it, and why mindful consumption is so important.” Raj’s energy and passion for the environment are infectious, and we’re proud to have him as part of our HDI family. Hasiru Dala Innovations is proud to support? Way for life’s initiative of planting saplings in government #schools across #Bengaluru by supplying post-consumer PET bottle waste used as planters. Repurposing the #waste for something useful extends the life of the bottle till it no longer can be used when it can be recycled. We supplied around 2,000 post-consumer plastic bottles sourced from the city’s Dry Waste Collection Centres, Scrap Dealers, and our Waste Picker Entrepreneurs. With space constraints in urban areas, Way for life's innovative use of vertical gardening and drip irrigation from top to bottom is a brilliant solution to maximize greenery while conserving water. All this while repurposing bottles that would otherwise be trashed away into #landfills or water bodies. This project has been successfully completed at Kaverinagara Government School with 500 saplings planted and at B Narayanapura Government High School, Bengaluru with 300 saplings planted. There’s more to happen, and we are looking forward to it! With a background in sales and business development, Arif has also contributed to expanding business operations, strengthening client relationships, and enhancing team performance in his early career. Today, he brings all of that expertise to HDI, where day-in-day-out field operations lie at the heart of what we do. Under his leadership, Arif and his team ensure that waste from all our client locations is collected 7 days a week and responsibly directed to the right end destinations, achieving over 99% collection reliability and efficiency. Even during challenging times like COVID, his team stood strong, keeping operations in motion and ensuring our commitments to sustainability never faltered.
