The “Ticket Engineer Trap” Imagine scrolling through your Jira tickets and seeing the latest ones marked as resolved — by AI. ? Alan Varghese explains why becoming a “ticket engineer” is risky in today’s AI-driven software development landscape. AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot are reshaping software development by automating repetitive coding, bug-fixing, and routine feature development. If you focus only on these tasks, you risk being replaced by AI. The “Ticket Engineer Trap” is real. Engineers stuck in a reactive, task-based routine with no room for creativity or leadership are the first to face layoffs when companies trim their teams. To stay valuable, be value-oriented. For every ticket, ask: - Why is this important? - What value does it bring to the user? - Is there a better solution? Work cross-functionally by collaborating with designers and product managers. Understand the bigger picture, offer suggestions early in the design process, and ensure your work meets user needs. Upskill in areas AI can’t easily replace like system design, architecture, communication, leadership, and mentoring. These human-centric skills enhance your value and are less likely to be automated. Leverage AI to boost your productivity by automating mundane tasks. Focus on complex challenges and strategic work that drives real impact.
