?? Bat Week is October 25-31! ?? Bats play a crucial role in the health of our ecosystem, such as insect pest consumption and plant pollination. With threats posed by habitat destruction, climate change, and invasive species, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness about these vital species. We’re proud to work on projects year-round that contribute to protecting bat populations. Check out the photos below of senior associate and bat expert, Dave Johnston and wildlife ecologist, Emily Malkauskas, in action and some of the bat species they work with. Principal and marine ecologist Dr. Sharon Kramer will be discussing our work on this important seabird research project in a webinar on Tuesday, September 24. Sharon leads our marine renewable energy team.
Join us for a webinar on Tuesday, September 24, from 1-3 pm (PST) for a discussion of new research on the tradeoffs between seabird collision vulnerability and offshore wind power-generation potential along California's coast. The Schatz Energy Research Center and H. T. Harvey & Associates will be presenting our latest report on “Seabirds in 3D: A Framework to Evaluate Collision Vulnerability with Future Offshore Wind Developments.” We will be joined by Lisa Ballance (Oregon State University), Scott Johnson (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), and David Pereksta (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) to discuss our findings. Offshore wind will play a key role in California’s goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045, and this work will improve our understanding of seabirds in 3D and help evaluate potential locations for future wind energy developments with minimized impact to seabird populations. This talk will explore the methods used to model the collision vulnerability for 44 seabird species, and how we simulated wind facility power generation. We will also discuss possible tradeoffs between seabird vulnerability and power generation. The webinar is free and open to the public. For questions, email [email protected] or call 707-826-4345. This research is funded by the California Energy Commission's EPIC program. https://lnkd.in/gX6S69rj Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal Poly Humboldt Sponsored Programs Foundation, California Energy Commission

H. T. Harvey & Associates is saddened to share the news that Ron Duke passed away on May 25, 2024. Ron served as the company president from 1990-2020 and had been president emeritus and chairman-of-the-board since 2022. Trained as wildlife ecologist, Ron became an expert on the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse and the ecology and restoration of the marsh habitat on which it depends. Over the course of his career, Ron was involved in many of the key restoration projects in and around the San Francisco Bay, including in the critical early stages of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project. Throughout his more than four decades at the helm of the firm, he led with a relentless commitment to excellence and the unbiased application of ecological science to address complicated problems. He was also committed to continuous learning and exploration into innovative applications of ecological expertise. Ron made a deliberate choice to dedicate a portion of our activity to both basic and applied ecological research, including to strategic research opportunities in emerging industries, all with the goal of ensuring robust science remains at the heart of our work. A full tribute to Ron professionally and personally can be found here. https://t.ly/sLwpy

Check out this KQED story about how excavated muck from construction of a new segment of BART is being used in the creation of new wetland habitats in the San Francisco Bay. Gavin Archbald, senior restoration ecologist and associate, and other members of our restoration ecology team are part of this exciting reuse work.
From Tunnel Muck to Tidal Marsh, BART Extension Could Benefit the Bay: Nearly all San Francisco wetlands were destroyed in the last century. Now muck dug up for BART's new tunnel in San José will be used to restore wetlands. “It’s just a terrific benefit if we can make it work with all the parties in to help us,” said Donna Ball, a senior scientist at San Francisco Estuary Institute. https://lnkd.in/gFsPchrg

Look up in the sky! Saturday May 11 is World Migratory Bird Day. From ornithologists to our business management team members, we’re batty for birds and always on the lookout for feathered friends. Senior health and safety coordinator and avid birder (and guide!), Linda Terrill, shared photos of these beauties from her collection along with migration info. Drop a note or photo about your favorite migratory bird(s) in the comments. Photos (clockwise from top left):? The ??????????-???????????? ???????????????? Once the most common albatross off California, its population has recovered to over 7,000. (Torishima Island, Japan) The ?????????? ???????????????????? This Arbor Day we’re reflecting on the intersection of trees and restoration ecology—highlighting our research and work with the California sycamore and sycamore alluvial woodland (SAW) habitat. SAW is a rare habitat dominated by the California sycamore and adapted to the state’s intermittent streams and Mediterranean climate. SAW habitat has declined significantly in the state due to changes in hydrologic, geomorphic, and ecological processes. At the CALIFORNIA SOCIETY FOR ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION (SERCAL) Conference next month, Ryan Hegstad, an ISA-Certified arborist and senior restoration ecologist, will present the results of a study evaluating planted seedling and stake establishment efforts for SAW restoration projects. If you’re attending SERCAL either remotely or in person, come check out Ryan’s talk at on Th, May 9, from 1:45-2:45 and visit us at our sponsor table.?If you’re not attending and would like to learn more about our work with SAW please contact us via our website (www.harveyecology.com).? https://lnkd.in/gWdAKF6Y #We’reHiring #ArborDay #restorationecology #arborist #SERCAL2024 #CaliforniaSycamore #SycamoreAlluvialWoodland #greenjobs #trees

As a science-based ecological services firm, the health of local (and global) ecosystems is never far from our thoughts. Today on Earth Day we are amplifying EARTHDAY.ORG 's theme of Planet vs Plastics and their challenge to reduce plastic use by 60% by 2040. Consider using their calculator to determine your plastic footprint and where you can take steps to decrease it. https://lnkd.in/g9GeSU5q And check out their other materials and resources about plastic in our environment. The Monterey Bay Aquarium offers suggestions on how to reduce the flow of plastic from land to sea including supporting changes in your communities. https://lnkd.in/gK8Gm5mv #planetnotplastic #earthday2024 #reusables #earthdayeveryday
