“COVID and Ukraine bought food security back to the forefront of the government and the private sector. Some have asked, ‘Is food the new oil?’ The facts are we need to produce 30 to 50 percent more food by 2050 on the same amount of land." - NASA Harvest Director Inbal Becker-Reshef at the World Agri-Tech Summit in London. ?? https://lnkd.in/e_agkxQf

Super excited about the release of our ESA WorldCereal crop mapping system! ??? ?? ?? ?? Get started right away through our fully #opensource #GitHub repository: https://lnkd.in/ehz3tXNB ?? Get the power of NASA Harvest's globally pre-trained #Presto model, finetuned on global #WorldCereal crop data, and a downstream #CatBoost classifier that YOU can train and deploy to produce crop maps on the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, all at your fingertips from a set of #Jupyter #Notebooks Many features will be gradually added over time and we hope to get much more harmonized #referencedata into our repository for the benefit of the entire community (you can help!). But for now, feel free to already give it a try (no installation needed ?? ) and let us know any questions or feedback you may have ?? . #EO #cropland #remotesensing #CropMapping #Agriculture #EarthObservation #FoodSecurity European Space Agency - ESA Zoltan Szantoi Benjamin Koetz International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) VITO VITO Remote Sensing Jeroen Degerickx Jeroen Dries Christina Butsko Hannah Kerner Inbal Becker-Reshef Gabriel Tseng Wageningen University & Research University of Strasbourg GEOGLAM (Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring) FAO World Food Programme openEO
?? Launch of the #WorldCereal Crop Mapping System! Today, during our release webinar, we introduced our new cloud-based processing system. Access these tools ?? through easy-to-use #Jupyter #Notebooks on our #GitHub repo – no installation needed!???????? With the #WorldCereal system you can: ? Apply a pre-trained cropland detection model anytime and anywhere in the world.? ? Train and apply custom cropland detection models for specific regions and years.? ? Train and apply crop type detection models for your region, season, and crop types. Following #Senegal, we headed to Zambia to lead a #EarthObservations Based Crop Monitoring Training Learning Exchange! ??????? With my team, we led a comprehensive four-day session from June 11-14, 2024, bringing together 50 participants from five countries to enhance agricultural monitoring capabilities using cutting-edge Earth observation tools. Key highlights: - Introduced the Global Agriculture Monitoring System (GLAM) and Early Warning Explorer (EWX) - Equipped the Zambia Ministry of Green Economy and Environment to produce periodic crop condition reports - Facilitated knowledge sharing among Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda - Covered topics from EO basics (collecting data, making maps) to developing comprehensive crop bulletins It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm of participants and the commitment from high-level officials. The Director of Agriculture in Zambia showed appreciation for the skills and the potential of the systems we introduced for robust agriculture monitoring. A big thank you to our collaborators: GEOGLAM (Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring), ICPAC , and especially CIAT for making our 3rd Learning Exchange successful. Looking forward to more! Our motivation grows as methods and systems develop. We need to invest in human capacity to guide, develop, and own these systems to lead to better decisions that can support farmers. We've already seen the potential and quantifiable impact in #Kenya and #Uganda, and want to keep the momentum going. When national teams own the information and data generation, better decisions and policies will not only be made, but governments will follow through. Proud to champion to this critical work and excited to see its impact unfold! #EarthObservation #AgricultureMonitoring #FoodSecurity NASA Harvest #UMD SERVIR Global NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration P.S. "Extreme weather is one of the primary drivers of crop failures around the world. Crop failures – the total or near-total loss of a farm or region’s crops – greatly reduce the availability of food and can have dire consequences for food security. They also reduce the need for agricultural labor, cutting off critical income streams for farm workers and further exacerbating food insecurity. As a result, predicting such crop failures is a crucial component of food security early-warning systems." NASA Harvest's Weston Anderson writes in Carbon Brief that El Ni?o forecasts are able to give early warning of crop failures. Recent research shows that, in some locations, crop yield shocks can be predicted more than six months ahead of time and – in certain cases – before a crop is even planted.
