Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute’s Michael Klompas, Theodore Pak, and Chanu Rhee, MD, MPH, FCCM, FIDSA, FSHEA Rhee have a new commentary in the Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology journal. They offer insights on a study about protecting healthcare personnel and patients from respiratory viral infections. In addition to staff quarantining measures, they recommend mandating masking when local infection rates are high and mandating SARS-CoV-2 and influenza vaccines for staff. This helps contributes to fewer staff sick days and significant reductions in hospital-acquired respiratory viral infections. ?? Read the commentary: https://lnkd.in/e6rB7qTQ

关于我们
The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute is a research and teaching collaboration between Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Harvard Medical School. The Department was created in 1992 to focus on research and education as they relate to the care of large defined populations, including individuals who do not seek out care. As the nation's first medical school appointing department based in a health plan, we are strategically positioned to improve population health and health care delivery locally, nationally, and internationally. We’re distinctive for our scope, expertise, and collaborations. Our mission and activities are highly consonant with the National Academy of Medicine’s advocacy for a national Learning Health System – one that incorporates evidence-based practices into routine care, captures new knowledge as part of the ongoing delivery of care, and then applies new knowledge in a timely manner. The Department is housed in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, a limited liability corporation of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. We are one of 15 Harvard Medical School affiliates. In 2021, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care combined with Tufts Health Plan, creating Point32Health. The Institute is also part of Point32Health and now partners with both health plans. Dr. Emily Oken is both Department Chair and President of the HPHC Institute.

Hefei Wen from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute led a study that found that the 2019 Medicare opioid safety policy initially reduced opioid prescribing to high-risk populations. However, the policy's effectiveness diminished over time. Dr. Wen and team highlight the importance of continually evaluating health policies to combat opioid crisis, especially for vulnerable groups like Medicare beneficiaries. The study encourages policymakers to use data-driven insights to guide future policy iterations, to better address the evolving needs of high-risk populations. ?? The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute proudly announces the launch of the Center for Sepsis Epidemiology and Prevention Studies (SEPSIS), led by Drs. Chanu Rhee, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FSHEA Rhee and Michael Klompas. Sepsis affects over 1.7 million adults annually in the U.S. and leads to more than 350,000 deaths. Globally, it leads to 49 million cases and 11 million deaths annually, accounting for one in five deaths worldwide. The impact is immense, with many survivors facing long-term health issues. The Center is dedicated to advancing understanding, prevention, and management of sepsis. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekNMgKZ8 Read press release: https://lnkd.in/eYWD_sxB
