Engaging all your students in the deep learning of math instruction is not easy. MQI Coaching can help.

关于我们

MQI Coaching provides content-specific professional development to teachers and instructional leaders to help them improve math instruction in their classrooms and schools. The MQI Coaching model uses an evidence-based observational instrument, the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) rubric, as a lens through which teachers and coaches reflect on and analyze math instruction. Using classroom video and the MQI rubric in regular coaching cycles, coaches help teachers self-identify areas for instructional growth and commit to realistic and actionable next steps to improve their math instruction. MQI Coaching is an initiative of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University.

Practitioner Voices: Language Technologies in Math Education June 23, 2025?- June 24, 2025 Our colleagues at the Stanford EduNLP lab are hosting a 2-day summit called Practitioner Voices: Language Technologies in Math Education. The goal is to gather math teachers and leaders and empower them to think expansively about where language technologies and AI can go in classroom and school settings. Instead of sharing an edtech product or research agenda, we want to create a space for educators to inform where research and subsequently industry will go. Learn more:?https://lnkd.in/enHSrD5p

  • MQI Coaching is proud to partner with colleagues at the University of Maryland and Stanford University to help develop a large-scale, open-source dataset to train AI tools on K–12 math education. The dataset, to be sourced over the next three years from classroom recordings of 300 instructors around the country who teach 4th to 8th grade, will capture key teaching moves and student mathematical practices that can be used by edtech companies to improve curriculum and by multidisciplinary researchers to dig into key issues like student belonging and teaching quality. With the support of the Gates Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation, this work aims to improve the ability of artificial intelligence to strengthen math instruction and boost learning. MQI Coaching was featured in Harvard Magazine this week in a profile of CEPR Faculty Director Thomas Kane, highlighting the impact of its model on teachers and classrooms: "'The teacher walks through the rubric with you,' explains Tammy Tucker, a former elementary and middle school teacher and principal in West Virginia trained in MQI coaching. Thanks to video feedback—which allows teachers to see how students react to their lessons—'the classrooms are more student-centered,' Tucker says. 'The students are doing the thinking, they’re doing the talking.' Khethiwe Hudson, an assistant principal in Arlington County Public Schools, outside Washington, D.C., recalls working with a teacher who struggled to improve based on written and verbal feedback. When he finally watched videos of himself, however, 'He couldn’t believe the things he was doing,' Hudson says. 'I saw an incredible turnaround.'” Read the profile: https://lnkd.in/eiQnPXC2

After reporting on the first year of academic recovery last year, the #EducationRecoveryScorecard (a collaboration between CEPR and The Educational Opportunity Project (EOP) at Stanford University) has issued a district-level analysis of educational progress from 2019-2024, “Pivoting from Pandemic Recovery to Long-Term Reform.” As of Spring 2024, the average U.S. student remained nearly half a grade level behind pre-pandemic achievement in math and reading. Students are even further behind in reading than they were in 2022. The report finds: ?? Spots of Hope: Although no states have improved in both math and reading on the NAEP, over 100 districts are performing above pre-pandemic levels in both math and reading. ?? Widening achievement gaps: the highest income decile districts were nearly four times more likely to recover in both math and reading than the lowest income decile districts. ?? A positive impact from federal aid: The federal relief dollars prevented even larger losses in higher poverty districts (where the aid reduced losses by 10 percent of a grade equivalent in math and reading)—but it mattered how districts spent the money.? ?? A strong role of chronic absenteeism: Chronic absenteeism played a significant role in slowing recovery and widening gaps between high and low poverty districts. ??
