We started bright and early on February 13th with a visit to The Public Theater?on Lafayette Street. First, we learned from Costume Director Vanessa Watters and Melinda Basaca about the process of bringing costumes from conception to production. We then had the pleasure of hearing from Murray Abeles, CFO, who took us through the history of The Public Theater, the pipeline of artistic development, and the financial consequences of mounting a production, knowing that it will more than likely be a loss for the organization. He discussed the challenges of renovating the Delacorte Theater (an $85 million undertaking), and how contributions help defray the cost of offering free Shakespeare to millions of New Yorkers.
