Harris borrowed $1,500 to open the first Harris Food Store in Charlotte, North Carolina. The store was founded on three principles: high-quality products, clean stores and superior customer service. Harris was considered a pioneer of the grocery industry and opened the first supermarket that featured air-conditioning and stayed open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights. Just a few years later, Willis L. Teeter and his brother, Paul, opened their first Teeter’s Food Mart in Mooresville, North Carolina. On February 1, 1960, Harris Super Markets and Teeter’s Food Marts merged to form Harris Teeter Super Markets, Inc. with 15 stores in operation. Now with more than 250 stores and 36,000 valued associates, Harris Teeter is proud to provide an exceptional shopping experience to millions of customers each year.

WOW! Our incredible customers and valued associates raised more than $665K through our Disaster Relief Round Up campaign to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts! Your generosity directly benefits the American Red Cross in helping those affected by the hurricane and we're proud to give our customers and associates a convenient way to give back. But we didn't stop there - Harris Teeter also donated 550,000+pounds of ice and water, donated food to local hospitals, partnered with vendors for product donations, contributed $250K to @manna_foodbank, and sent two truckloads of food and water to help immediately feed 40,000 people. Plus, we've supported our associates with essential supplies and support during the ongoing recovery efforts. Today, we are grateful for the opportunity to provide a $250,000 check, two truckloads of drinking water, and two truckloads of emergency food boxes to the MANNA FoodBank in Asheville, NC. The product donation will help create 40,000 meals in the impacted area. This donation will also support MANNA FoodBank's work addressing immediate disaster relief needs and support long-term help to replenish supply and rebuild their facility after their warehouse was destroyed by the hurricane. We want to give a special thanks to Harris Teeter's valued associates, who, despite being affected themselves, are on the ground, delivering and distributing aid to our neighbors in Western North Carolina. Happy 100th Birthday to our wonderful Harris Teeter customer, Mr. Marty! Today, we surprised him with a birthday party at our New Market Square Harris Teeter in Burlington, N.C.! Mr. Marty visits us every Thursday morning for his Starbucks and often stops to buy flowers for the staff at his assisted living community. Not only is he a very special customer to us, he's also a World War II veteran! Thanks to the New Market Square store team for making Mr. Marty feel extra special with balloons, a card and of course, a Harris Teeter cake!
