This Black History Month, the Buhai Center is proud to celebrate the Black Women Lawyers Association, our co-founders and partners in championing justice in the family law courts.? ? Mablean Ephreim, co-founder of the Buhai Center, Margo Bouchet, original founding member of BWL and Buhai Board Member/BWL Liaison, and current BWL president Shardé Skahan, share the story of the partnership between the Buhai Center and BWL, from the Buhai Center’s beginnings as a 100% volunteer-run organization solely providing domestic violence restraining orders to the thriving, nationally-recognized champion for family law justice it is today. ? We are grateful for our founding partnership, which continues to flourish, with generations of BWL members dedicating countless hours and resources to the Buhai Center while gaining invaluable family law experience and giving back to the community. ? The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law (The Center) was founded in the early 1980s by Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Bar and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. Since its inception, the Center has served as a cornerstone of family law and domestic violence assistance for low-income persons in California. MISSION We protect victims of domestic violence and improve the well-being of children living in poverty. With the help of volunteers, the Center provides free family law assistance and legal education to the poor. We strive to empower people in need and assure them meaningful access to the courts. CENTURY CAMPAIGN "Immediate Effect. Last Impact. You Can Make A Difference." To help secure our future, the Harriett Buhai Center has established a new annual giving program, the Century Campaign, which replaces our special event fundraising. Through this annual giving program we have reduced time and expense spent on entertainment galas, and re-directed these valuable resources to our clients and programs. You are invited to join in the effort. You hold the keys to our success and can make a difference every day in the lives of domestic violence victims and poor children.
