Meet Jordan Johnson, LPN Coordinator, and Amanda Rea, Ambulatory Clinical Educator, with Cape Fear Valley Medical Group! Jordan and Amanda are part of the Cape Fear Valley Medical Group Clinical Admin team, and help with orientation for new hires and education for all of Cape Fear Valley’s 85 clinics. For Amanda, being a clinical educator combines two things she has a passion for – education and caring for others. “I get to work with many other disciplines and collaborate on projects,” Amanda says, “developing new processes, competencies, and policies specific the the outpatient setting.” For Jordan, it is the opportunity to work with new hires that is rewarding. “It is nerve-wracking to start a new job, especially if you are straight out of school,” Jordaan says. “I like being able to get to know new employees and help to ease their nerves and build their confidence. It’s very rewarding to see them grow throughout their orientation week and to leave us with confidence.” Both women have active lives outside their work lives. Amanda loves music with a passion. She sings in Cumberland Choral Arts and directs the handbell choir at her church. Jordan loves spending time with her family, especially in warmer months when they can spend all day outside. But it is the team they work with that keeps them engaged in the work that they do. “Teamwork and communication are paramount in our department,” Amanda says..”Our outpatient services are continually expanding and we have to work together to be successful.” We asked Jordan what advice she would give to someone interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, and her response was exactly what those who know her would expect. “I would tell them that it is a difficult job,” she says, “but you will never find anything more rewarding. We get the opportunity to make a difference in so many patients' lives every day.” Thank you, Jordan and Amanda, for all you do to prepare our clinic employees to provide exceptional care to our patients. You are appreciated!

This Women’s History Month, we are recognizing women who have made a difference in the field of science and medicine – trailblazers like Annie Lowrie Alexander. Annie Lowrie Alexander (10 Jan. 1864–15 Oct. 1929), physician, teacher, and philanthropist, was born near the town of Cornelius in Mecklenburg County. Her father was Dr. John Brevard Alexander, a physician and author. Her mother was Ann Wall Lowrie. Miss Alexander, following early education under a private tutor and her father, entered Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia, from which institution she was graduated in 1884. After a year as intern at her alma mater, she became an assistant teacher of anatomy in the Woman's Medical College of Baltimore, Md., while at the same time practicing medicine privately. In 1887 she returned to North Carolina to become the first woman to practice medicine in the South, having obtained her license in 1885 from the Maryland Board of Medical Examiners (in a class of one hundred candidates, in which she was the only woman, she made the highest grade). Later she did postgraduate work in the New York Polyclinic. She continued to practice her profession until her death, serving on the staffs of the Presbyterian and St. Peter's hospitals of Charlotte and acting for twenty-three years as physician for the Presbyterian College for Women (later Queens College). Miss Alexander was noted for her femininity, gentle manners, and cultured womanhood. She was an honorary member of the North Carolina Medical Society and of the Southern Medical Society. She served as president of the Mecklenburg Medical Society and as a vice-president of the Women's Physicians of the Southern Medical Association. She died of pneumonia in Charlotte in 1929, after four days of illness, and was buried there in Elmwood Cemetery.
