Harlem Grown is saddened by the passing of our good friend and stalwart of the Harlem community, civil rights activist and crusader for justice, Dr. Hazel N. Dukes - president of NAACP New York State Conference.?Dr. Dukes dedicated more than 7 decades of her life as a crusader for racial equity, equality, and justice. A fierce advocate for access to quality education, Dr. Dukes established the Dr. Hazel N. Dukes Education Initiative, which fosters partnerships with public schools to ensure students are provided with tools to navigate the demands of the 21st Century and, ultimately, succeed. Here at Harlem Grown we strive to empower Harlem youth with skills to not just survive, but thrive, by teaching them the science of growing healthy food to nourish their body and their spirit. Harlem Grown partners with public schools to instruct children about urban farming, sustainability and nutrition. We salute the legacy of Dr. Hazel Dukes and commit to continuing her work every day.?

In New York City, 1.4 million residents rely on emergency food programs each year. In Harlem, poverty rates continue to rise while funding for community organizations like ours remains uncertain.?Federal funding freezes, shifting corporate priorities, and broader economic instability all threaten the essential work we do. Yet, the need has never been greater. Harlem Grown exists to bridge these gaps and support our community, providing our families with access to fresh foods, high-quality childcare, and opportunities to grow. We need partners who understand the urgency of community-driven efforts. Your investment enables us to adapt, innovate, and continue delivering transformative programs for Harlem's youth. In 2025, Harlem Grown will: ?? Distribute over 180,000 pounds of produce to families facing food insecurity in Harlem. ?? Expand our Farm and Food Education, serving 8,000 youth across our farms and classrooms. ?? Deepen our workforce development initiatives, equipping young leaders with the skills they need to thrive. Since our founding, private philanthropy has been the driving force behind our impact. Many of our community partners are facing funding cuts, making our work more critical than ever. We need you to stand with us. While the future remains uncertain, we know this: your investment in Harlem Grown creates lasting change. Donate today and be the change you want to see in the world, starting right here in Harlem. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/gUSCiRWx
