Highway capping projects are redefining urban landscapes by transforming infrastructure into vibrant public spaces that reconnect neighborhoods, mitigate environmental impacts, and create new parklands. While these projects hold immense potential, they also face complex challenges—from transportation planning and funding to sustaining public support over extended timelines. Hargreaves Jones is proud to contribute to this transformative movement. Join us on April 24, 2025, for The Architectural League of New York’s Current Work lecture series, where our president and CEO, Mary Margaret Jones, will present two of our in-progress highway capping projects: Penn’s Landing Park (Philadelphia, PA) A 12-acre green infrastructure project that decks over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard, reconnecting central Philadelphia with the Delaware River. The Stitch (Atlanta, GA) A proposed 14-acre park that will cap a ?-mile stretch of highway, linking downtown and midtown Atlanta while restoring a historic neighborhood once erased by mid-century urban renewal. Mary Margaret will be joined by: Chuck McDaniel, FASLA Chuck McDaniel | SWA Group (Southern Gateway Park, Dallas, TX) Nat Oppenheimer | TYLin (Introduction on structural considerations) Moderator: Juan Camilo Osorio Botero | Pratt Institute These projects, alongside others funded by the Reconnecting Communities Grant Program, highlight the power of design in repairing urban divisions and creating a more equitable public realm. Thousands of people enjoy Carpenter Park every day. They see a six-acre oasis of greenspace, shade trees, and artwork on the edge of downtown Dallas. We do too. We also see resilient soils designed to support sustainable, healthy vegetation. ?? #EngineeringPossibilities #DowntownDallas #Dallas #DFW

?? Our design for the Penn's Landing Pavilion is a finalist in the 2024 AIA Pennsylvania Architectural Excellence COTE and Design Awards! The new 11.5-acre Penn's Landing Park will reconnect Philadelphia to the Delaware River, guiding pedestrians from city sidewalks to a new public landscape, amenities, and attractions that bridges over I-95. The Pavilion is projected to be Philadelphia’s first mass timber and net zero structure for public use. Designed in collaboration with Hargreaves Jones Landscape Architecture, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC), and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the new Penn's Landing Park broke ground in September 2023. Winners will be announced in a live broadcast on December 3. Contact your local AIA chapter for more information on viewing parties.

In case you missed it, the First Americans Museum (FAM), designed by client Johnson Fain, is featured in Premier Construction Magazine! ABOUT FIRST AMERICANS MUSEUM (FAM): The concept for the museum, which honors 39 tribes in Oklahoma today, is a spiral that begins in the earth and ascends to the heavens. It is composed of two arcs: the western arc featuring permanent and rotating exhibitions and the northern arc that houses theaters, retail, dining, and other services necessary in modern museums.
