In honor of Black History Month, we had a special video series, “Black History Is…” Each week, Harbor employees shared their personal reflections on what Black History means to them. From honoring trailblazers to reflecting on memorable moments in their lives, their stories celebrated the resilience and impact of Black History. A few of the highlights included: ? Regina Walton discussing perseverance, innovation in STEM, and joy, as some of the highlights of what Black History Month means to her ? John Johnson, HDI-SCM sharing that his mother, an immigrant from Jamaica, was the first black woman to own a high-end fashion boutique in Chicago…as well as his own “first” as the black drum major at Northern Illinois University ? Dina Young highlighting Dr. Marian Croak's invention of VoIP – and how far we’ve come since Black History was celebrated for only a week ? As a freshly minted Fellow, this was my first time in the room with the College of Law Practice Management and it was a pretty awesome experience. The room is filled with challenging (for me, at times, intimidating) intellect and experience. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a forum where the audience’s energy matches and even challenges the stage in such an enjoyable fashion. Sitting amongst CMOs, CINOs, CIOs, Founders, and innovators with low tolerance for “the usual” makes for a frothy experience. Even more delight-inducing was being nominated by friends whom I admire (D. Casey Flaherty and Nicole Bradick this time and Connie Brenton when I was too green to make the cut) and joining my fellow Harbor Fellows Jeffrey Marple, Rachel Zahorsky, Kevin Clem, Bobbi Basile, Norm Mullock, and Zena Applebaum in legal’s version of the Avengers. So many unique skills, all honed, all complementary. Thanks, Chris Boyd and Debbie O’Connell and everyone at COLPM for welcoming me into the fold!
