Today, we honor the memory of those we lost and those who risked their lives for our safety on September 11, 2001. Managing Director Pete Petron reflects on his experience that day. “I was at my desk when the first plane hit the North Tower. The images were devastating, and the dust clouds from our office window are etched in my memory. On that day, the fact that “only” portions of the Pentagon burned seemed like good news. The city was in lockdown, making it difficult to reach out. I’ll never forget the anxious voicemails from my wife, who was home with our two small kids, wondering if I was okay. Her voice was a relief when we finally connected, and seeing my family that evening was pure joy. The day after felt like time stood still—home with my family and gathering with neighbors at the playground, seeking comfort and trying to make sense of it all. Later, I learned I lost a middle school friend, his wife, and their baby on the first plane. Others I knew less well also perished, while some friends and acquaintances survived and helped others. On each 9/11 anniversary, we collectively remember what happened, but like many who lived through that day, I often think back while randomly passing through TSA checkpoints or on a cool, sunny day with a clear, crystal blue sky.” #PatriotDay #NeverForget #USA
