    What If I Can’t Move My Business Phone Number to a New Carrier? Switching to a Voice over IP (VoIP) system is an exciting step for many businesses, offering flexibility, modern features, and cost savings over traditional phone systems. However, in some areas of Maine, certain phone numbers may not be transferable (or “portable”) due to how they were originally assigned by smaller telecom providers. But don’t worry—there’s a smooth path forward! Moving Forward with a New Number Even if your existing number can’t be moved, your new VoIP provider can assign a Maine-based number that includes your business name on Caller ID. This means your customers will still recognize your calls, keeping your business easily reachable. Ensuring a Seamless Transition To make the change as smooth as possible for your customers: * Forward Your Old Number – Keep your old number active with call forwarding to your new number for 6 to 12 months. * Create a Friendly Announcement – Set up a short message on your new number that welcomes callers and informs them of the change. Example: "Thank you for calling [Your Business Name]. Our new phone number is [New Number]. We’ll connect you now!" * Update Your Digital Presence – Be sure to change your number on your website, Google/Bing Business listings, social media, and online directories. * Revise Printed Materials – Update business cards, brochures, and any other printed materials with your new number moving forward. * Retire the Old Number (When Ready) – After 6-12 months, once your customers have adjusted, you can safely cancel the old line. A Positive Change for the Future While moving to a new number might seem like a challenge at first, it’s an opportunity to modernize your phone system, streamline your business communications, and ensure your customers can always reach you. With the right steps in place, the transition can be smooth and hassle-free!
