The mission of the HAPS Alliance is to eliminate the digital divide and bring connectivity to more people, places and things worldwide by using high altitude platform stations (HAPS) operating 20km above Earth in the stratosphere. The Alliance brings together some of the world's most recognizable companies across telecommunications, technology, aviation and aerospace. United in the goal of promoting HAPS technology, the Alliance was founded in 2020.

THIS is why stratospheric flight is so promising: HAPS Alliance member Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC) launched a stratospheric balloon on March 28, 2024 and more than 200 days later it is still airborne. The balloon, which is conducting research and development activities associated with navigation, has travelled more than 50,750 nautical miles thus far. Longer flight durations enabled by advances in materials, navigation, solar technology, batteries, beyond line-of-sight communication, and software?are expanding the potential use-cases for stratospheric flight. How are HAPS different than satellites? It comes down to physics. HAPS operate in earth's stratosphere at an altitude of around 20km. Compare that to a LEO satellite that operates at around 200km above earth. With closer proximity to earth, HAPS can operate like floating cell towers, enabling the same performance characteristics as terrestrial base stations. HAPS Alliance members AeroVironment, Inc. and SoftBank Corp. announced the successful flight test of Horus A, an upgraded Sunglider?built by AeroVironment?for government and commercial applications. This solar-powered UAS can carry up to 150 lb of payload and offers industry-leading stratospheric performance. ? Horus A features an enhanced design, avionics, and increased autonomy for greater mission flexibility. It has received airworthiness approval from the US Army and a Federal Aviation Administration Special Airworthiness Certificate to allow flight testing in the national airspace. HAPS Alliance members SoftBank Corp. and AeroVironment, Inc. announced another successful stratospheric flight for Sunglider,?a large-scale, solar-powered aircraft designed for HAPS stratospheric telecommunications. With its wingspan of?78m, Sunglider is capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 75kg. The HAPS Alliance recently held a special academic workshop to foster open dialogue between academic and industry members. This workshop enabled HAPS Alliance members?to engage with academic participants, learn about their work and explore collaborative opportunities.
