Sam Altman betrayed Elon Musk for $100 million in 2019 ?? It was December 2015. Four people sat in a bar in Silicon Valley and decided to build the most advanced AI systems for Humanity ?? These 4 people were ?? 1. Sam Altman 2. Elon Musk 3. Greg Brockman - Former CTO of Stripe 4. Ilya Sutskever - renowned AI scientist This meeting marked the founding of OpenAI—a nonprofit company with a vision to create advanced AI for the betterment of humanity ?? However, the most exciting name on this list was Elon Musk (one of the co-founders), who initially donated around $100 million to OpenAI ?? But things started changing soon ?? - 1. From 2015 to 2017, there wasn’t much progress, as they were hitting bottlenecks and could not get funding because no VC was keen to donate money to a non-profit; they were there to make more money. And without money, you cannot build big models. 2. Hence, things were not going well, and the nail in the coffin was Elon Musk's resignation from the board in 2018 due to a conflict of interest with Tesla. 3. But a very interesting thing happened during this brief period of 2017-18: Google released a research paper introducing " transformers" - the tech behind today's LLM (large language models), such as ChatGPT. 4. It was a cost-effective and accurate way to train big neural networks, and OpenAI figured out that this was the breakthrough they were looking at to build powerful AI 5. However, they had a constraint—they had no funds to build such big models, and because they were a nonprofit, no VC was interested in funding them. 6. Sam Altman saw this opportunity and created a for-profit Open AI firm inside the nonprofit, then started raising money and got funded more than $1bn. This was the only way they could have been funded to build bigger models. But, this move essentially rendered Elon Musk's initial investment of $100 million worthless, and he now has no stake in the company. Do you think Sam Altman and Open AI betrayed Elon Musk?
